With the Annual Pony Express Reenactment fast approaching, I have been preparing Spartan for our run. One way of preparing Spartan for the terrain that we will be encountering is to increase his proprioception.

Proprioception is a fancy term for body and limb awareness. Proprioception can be increased through massage and by using kinesiology tape on the body.

Benefits of Increased Proprioception:
- Injury Prevention
- Rehabilitation of Neural Pathways
- Clear Body Communication
- Increase in Agility and Performance
- Better Balance
- Heightened Coordination
- Faster Reflex Reactions

During the reenactment Spartan will have to carry a heavy mochila full of mail through rough terrain. Understanding where he places his feet is key to a safe and fast run.

Proprioception taping is a great way to help any Equine Athlete perform to their best ability.

If you're looking to ensure your Equine Athlete's well-being while they perform at a high caliber, choosing my equine therapy services is the right step.

Anatomy Deep Dive: Understanding Cranial Bone Fixations

Cranial sutures can be found between each cranial bone. These sutures can sometimes become fixed. This can be do to an injury or the birthing process. Fixations in these sutures can lead to decreased movement in the joints that results in headaches, lack of concentration, aggression, or irritation.

An easy way to determine if there may be cranial fixations is to observe the horse's face from the front. Draw a line down the center and look at the top of the nostrils, eyes, and ears. If there are any asymmetries present, a fixation in those sutures may be suspected.

Other indicators of cranial bone fixations:
- Parietal and Frontal Sutures: Symptoms can include headaches, tossing/shacking head, lack of concentration, and/or nervousness.
- Lacrimal Sutures: Symptoms can include teary/dry eyes, vision issues, and/or balance issues.
- Nasal Sutures: Symptoms can include labored breathing, halter/bridle sensitivity, nasal discharge, and/or bridge of nose sensitivity.
- Maxilla Sutures: Symptoms can include TMJ pain, difficulty chewing, dropping feed, appetite changes, and/or restlessness.

If you suspect any cranial bone fixations, give me a call or PM me! We can work together to help alleviate symptoms and curate a treatment plan unique to your horse.

Equipment Spotlight: My Hands and My Intuition

There are a lot of tools on the market for equine bodyworkers but none of them will ever replace my hands. Through my hands, I am able to read the body and determine the best treatment plan that suits your horse as an individual. Don't get me wrong, some of the tools that are on the market are great and work wonders. But they will always be a supportive therapy to what my hands are able to do.

My books are open for bodywork sessions this spring and summer!! If you would like to get your horse feeling their best before peak performance season, give me a call or pm me!

Equipment Spotlight: Massage Guns and Percussion Therapy

Percussion Therapy has increased in popularity in recent years. Because the massage gun utilizes rapid, repetitive pulses that pe*****te into soft tissues, it is an excellent addition to any bodywork program.

Percussion therapy can help improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, increase recovery after exertion, increase range of motion, promote relaxation of chronic tight muscle groups, and helps support older animals that are experiencing stiffness.

With any modality or tool, there are a few safety considerations. Areas that the massage gun should not be used is directly over bone, joints, the spine, areas of injury or inflammation, or sensitive regions such as the throat or abdomen.
