How Joe found belonging at Richmond Residential:

Joe Green lived with his mother up until January of 2026. In January Joe moved into his own apartment with the help of Richmond Residential.

Since moving into his own place, Joe now finds himself surrounded by community, wether it be his friends, neighbors, or the RRSI staff.

Joe likes that at his new apartment complex he can find lots of places to walk around and that he can attend events held by the apartment staff.

Joe also works at Virginia Commonwealth University, in a program called the "Rehabilitation Research and Training Center", where he helps individuals with disabilities find jobs. Joe likes to get lunch with his coworkers, whom he is close with.

Joe often times felt that life at home was not a place where he felt a sense of belonging. He wanted more independence and a place that he could call his own. We are beyond grateful that we can provide Joe with a place where he feels like he belongs, thank you Joe!

Today we speak with Shaquana Wilson, a Direct Support Professional at Richmond Residential's Fisher Crest home.

Shaquana has been working with individuals with disabilities for over 20 years. In this video, Shaquana tells us about the unique things the individuals at Fisher Crest enjoy and how everyone brings a unique "flavor" to this home.

Shaquana, thank you for your hard work and dedication to Richmond Residential. It's because of you that we are able to make RRSI a place where person-centered care is provided for individuals with diverse abilities and support needs, facilitating choice, growth and community participation.

Today we ask you to imagine a world where:

Nobody knows your name
Nobody expects to see you
& Nobody notices when you're missing

This might sound unrealistic or highly unlikely to happen to you, but the truth is that members of the disabled community often feel these ways on a daily basis.

It's no secret that disabled people are oftentimes treated differently in our society than those without disabilities. Many times this difference in treatment leads to feelings of being forgotten or left behind.

Everyone deserves to be known in their community. Everyone deserves to have family or friends who can expect to see them regularly. Everyone deserves to have people in their life who notice when they're missing.

The importance of human connection cannot be undervalued and at Richmond Residential we make sure those connections stay strong. At Richmond Residential it is our mission to make sure that all individuals within our care feel that they belong.

Wow! This is a super important training program to develop and it really makes you think “Why doesn’t this program exist already?”

As part of VBPD’s recent assessment of supports for family caregivers in Virginia, we found that siblings of Virginians with disabilities are often unsung champions for disability rights and advocacy. As parents age, siblings often assume greater responsibilities as advocates, decision makers and caregivers.

That’s why VBPD recommends that the state develops training programs to help siblings more smoothly transition into these roles with confidence and ease. Go to the full assessment for more details!

For people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, being in the community doesn't always mean truly belonging to it.

Think about what makes you feel connected to the places you go.

Someone knows your name.
Someone expects to see you.
Someone notices when you're missing.
Someone is genuinely glad you're there.

A trip to the grocery store is being in the community.

Having someone there greet you by name? That's connection.

Living in a neighborhood puts you in a community.

Having neighbors who know you? That's belonging.

At RRSI, we believe everyone deserves more than simply a place in the community.

Everyone deserves to be known there.
