They key to any tip holding it's shape and not mushrooming, or in other words the side of the tip starts sticking out past the side of the ferrule and you can feel it with your nail or even see it under the light in most cases is the Burnish that is done by the installer. There is a process and also material that ensures the burnish is done correctly and with best chances to not Mushroom.

This is a shaft done today. When a tip is cut using a blade on the lathe to make it match the width of the ferrule it will have a dull and like raw leather look. From there, a very loght sanding is done on the side of the tip only going all the way to 5000 grit. Only touching the ferrule usually around 2000 and higher just to give it a nice polished shine. Even rough ferrules, I will use more cleaner than sand paper to make sure I don't take any material off of the ferrule as it starts to make your ferrule look tapered.

After the 5 step sand paper is done, with the last couple being a "Wet Sand", there is then liquids and pastes to apply to the side of the tip to help lock the leather so it doesn't move. That mixed with a little piece of leather will give the shine and burnished look seen in the pic.

To me, after the surfaces are prepped and the tip is glued on, this is by far the most important step. Leather tips are just that, leather. The leather has to compress when it impacts something hard like a cueball. So where does that compressed leather want to go? It want to move outward almost like when you smash a hot marshmallow with some crackers. The burnished step makes it so the material still will compress, because physics says it has to. But with the side burnished properly the tip shoild only compress maybe leaving like an indent in the top of the tip that allows you to reshape if needed until it cannot compress anymore.

For example super soft tips, even a great burnished on the sides, they still can compress and get a little flat. As long as the material doesn't push outward, the only that might need to be done is a quick reshaping and it will have its roundness and most likely stay for a long time. Break Tip that have synthetic or phenolic materials still get burnished, but more for esthetics.

Reach out if your tip is mushrooming, need a reshape and re burnished or just need a new tip in general.

Thanks
Cody

Didn't grab pics of all of the latest installs this week, but for anyone looking for ideas of something new, or needing a replacement of what you already. This was a G2 Medium with and added clear pad. G2 has out performed and held up more than any tip I have seen yet

The WSPA Board is excited to announce a number of changes for 2023 and the foreseeable future.

The first is that we will be splitting the tournament into two tournaments once again. With continued growth of the WSPA sanctioning body and State Championships participation, we see it necessary to run singles and team events on separate weeks. While we realize two events may not accommodate everybody’s schedule, we feel that two Thursday through Sunday events is a good alternative to extending one event to run nearly a full calendar week. Running two events will come at a greater cost to the organization resulting in an increase in sanction fees as well as admin fees for tournament entries.

Fox Cities Exhibition Center (Appleton), and Central Wisconsin Convention & Expo Center (Rothschild) have allowed us to amend our existing contracts in exchange for having an event each year for the next two years. As always, we continue to seek new venues that can host an event of this size and duration that can also match or exceed what we are currently offered. This is important as we want to return as much as we can to the players. In 2023 and beyond, we will be adding up to $50,000 or more between both events!

Secondly, we are extremely excited to announce that we will now be using Diamond pool tables for the WSPA State Championships. This was a tough decision, being that our table provider John Stich and his team have done a phenomenal job with the delivery and set up of our events. We thank them for their years of hard work with our organization and wish John the very best in the future knowing that he doesn’t have a difficult time finding work given his resumé. Switching to two events has also made these tables possible as the load into the hotel ballrooms in Appleton may not have been feasible with the forklift needed for Diamond tables. There will also be an increase in green fees with the additional cost of table rental.

The dates for the 2023 Singles State Championships are February 9th-12th in Appleton at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center, and the Team State Championships will be held March 30th-April 2nd in Rothschild at the Central Wisconsin Convention & Expo Center.

Thank you for your continued support and confidence in the WSPA!
