It's a simple check-in used widely in counseling and recovery work, and it holds up because these four states quietly amplify everything else. A hard conversation at 11pm on an empty stomach is a different conversation than the same one after food and sleep.

Answer yes to any of them? Address that first. The problem will still be there, and you'll be in better shape to handle it.
