Crews hard at work getting the necessary certifications to help protect fire crews around WA state this season. There have been some questions revolving around our new involvement in Wildland support.

Question: Does EARH EMS deployments affect the local 911 service?

No, our current staffing model is not changing. We will still provide 2 ambulances 24/7 for the 911 and transport service with ALS services available and a solo response in Washtucna.

Question: Is EMS personnel going to be fighting fires?

No. Our EMS service does not specialize in or perform fire suppression services. Our role on deployments is medical standby. We provide medical care to the fire teams.

Question: Are Adam’s county tax dollars used to pay for this service?

No. The department of Natural Resources for WA state pays for these services.

Question: What ambulances are being used for these deployments?

Currently the large red ambulance and the blue and white box ambulance are registered for deployment. The new ambulance is for 911 and inter-facility use. Due to the nature of standbys (a lot of parked time) it is ideal for our older ambulances as it’s easier on them and less mileage. All of our ambulances rotate around based on maintenance schedules and operational needs.

Lots of outreach and questions from the community recently and I would like to address some here!

Question: Does EMS no longer service Washtucna?

Answer: EMS services Washtucna with 24/7 ambulance coverage. Washtucna remains part of our ASA (ambulance service area) with the state of Washington and is part of our response zone and emergency management plan. We have 1 full time BLS ambulance and 1 full time ALS ambulance on 24/7 to service ALL of our response area. In addition to this we have a solo response ALS equipped ambulance in the south end of the county that is staffed 50% or more of the time for faster response times. Our two main out ambulances, while primarily staffed in Ritzville, spend time in Washtucna, Lind, Benge, and Ralston for cross county coverage and area familiarization.

Question: Does East Adam’s EMS only transport to East Adam’s hospital?

Answer: No. Many contributing factors go into deciding hospital destination with patient and patient family preference strongly considered. Other considerations are the stability of the patient and the patients need for specific interventions (such as a cardiac or stroke center). We can, have, and will transport to Othello, Colfax, Tri cities, Moses Lake, or Spokane based on patient need and preference.

Crews spent some time doing area familiarization with our new hires down in Washtucna and Benge and of course had to get some pictures with the bus!

Familiarization with our less frequented areas is an important part of our field training for new staff!

Many don’t know that Washtucna has an ALS ambulance with a solo paramedic that is available for rapid response in the south end of our county for critical calls.
