Medication routines can change quickly after a hospitalization, surgery, new diagnosis or change in condition.

Skilled home health can help patients and caregivers review what changed, understand what each medication is for, watch for side effects and know when to call for help. That kind of support can turn a confusing care plan into more confidence at home.

On Labor Day, we pause to recognize the people whose work brings comfort, dignity and support to others.

At Good Sam, mission-driven care takes people who can bring skill, compassion and steadiness into homes, facilities and hard conversations. Our team helps patients and families feel seen, supported and cared for during some of life’s most meaningful moments.

If you are looking for work that matters beyond a task list, this is the kind of team worth knowing.

Dementia is often described as memory loss, but families know it can affect much more: communication, swallowing, safety, sleep, movement, nutrition and daily care.

When dementia reaches an advanced stage, hospice can help families focus on comfort, dignity and quality of life. The hospice team can support symptom management, caregiver education, equipment needs and the grief families may carry throughout the journey.

Music has a way of comforting the soul when words aren't enough. A huge thank you to Sibyl Fishburn and Carla Fosbre, who brought the gentle, soothing sounds of their dulcimers to our hospice house this past Friday.

Their gift of music creates moments of deep peace and comfort for our patients and families when they need it most.

Grief does not follow a straight line. It does not keep a schedule, move at the same pace for everyone, or disappear because the rest of the world has gone back to normal.

On National Grief Awareness Day, we pause to recognize the many ways grief can show up: in quiet moments, in ordinary routines, in milestones, in memories, and in the love that remains after loss.

At Good Sam, we believe no one should have to walk through grief alone. Through bereavement support, community groups, and programs for children and families, we are here to offer space, compassion, and connection when the road feels heavy.

If you or someone you love is grieving, support is available.

Palliative care is not the same as hospice, and families do not have to wait until the end of life to ask about it.

Palliative care supports people living with serious illness by helping manage symptoms, clarify goals, support decision-making, and improve quality of life. It can be especially helpful for people living with conditions such as heart failure, COPD, cancer, dementia, kidney disease, or other illnesses that bring complex symptoms and repeated medical decisions.

Support earlier in the journey can help patients and families feel less alone.

Hydrangeas symbolize gratitude, grace and heartfelt emotion, making them a meaningful way to honor two very special members of the Good Sam family.

Yesterday, we celebrated Pat Davidson and Roux and the incredible impact they have made over the past decade. Through Pat’s dedicated service and Roux’s gentle, comforting presence, they have brought kindness, connection and joy to patients, families and staff throughout Good Sam.

To recognize their contributions, a generous donor made a gift to name one of our hydrangea gardens in honor of Pat and Roux. We are deeply grateful for this thoughtful tribute and for the generosity that helps create meaningful moments like this.

As the garden continues to grow and bloom, we hope it will serve as a lasting reminder of the compassion Pat and Roux have shared with so many and the difference they have made at Good Sam.

Today, we had the privilege of celebrating Aaron Housh and the lasting impact of his leadership, service and dedication to Good Sam.

Surrounded by colleagues, family, friends and community partners, we reflected on the many ways Aaron has helped shape our organization and strengthen our mission of serving patients and families throughout our community.

The afternoon included a special recognition from the Good Sam Board of Directors and a proclamation from Roanoke Mayor Joe Cobb officially declaring August 26, 2026, Aaron Housh Day in the City of Roanoke.

We are incredibly grateful for Aaron’s leadership and for the commitment he has shown to Good Sam, our team and the communities we serve. Today was a fitting celebration of a leader whose contributions will continue to make a difference for years to come.

Please join us in celebrating Aaron and thanking him for all he has given to Good Sam.
