Silage season is upon us and we need to think about how to manage our drive over silage piles’ construction. It can be a very economical choice to store feed in a well-constructed pile, but if done incorrectly, excessive dry matter losses can be seen.

Here are Dr. Renato Schmidt’s top 5 tips for silage pile construction:
1. Location—Build your pile on a non-porous floor like cement or asphalt with enough slope to properly drain.
2. Size—Construct the pile large enough to hold all the intended forage without height and sidewall slope being safety factors and with a small enough face to prevent heating during feed-out. There are many calculators out there to help determine this including one on University of Wisconsin-Madison Team Forage website.
3. Packing—Plan on continuously packing the pile during filling to create a stable anaerobic environment. Aim for at least 15 lb of dry matter/cubic foot at 35% DM or 44 lb/cubic foot on an as-fed basis.
4. Progressive Wedge—Use the progressive wedge technique aiming for at least a 4:1 run-to-rise ratio. Ideally push layers no more than 6 inches thick to achieve good packing continuously.
5. SAFETY—Our number 1 priority is always that everyone comes home safe. Only make piles as high as the feed-out equipment can handle and be cautious while working amongst machinery.

SilageSnap App

There is a free app for iPhone and android users from the University of Wisconsin that will determine the KPS (Kernel Processing Score) for corn silage. Using it is very easy.
1. Calibrate your phone through the app with a quarter, dime, and penny (US) .
2. Dump wet CS into a container of water and wash the fiber from the CS letting the grain sink to the bottom. Pull all the forage off the surface.
3. Pour off the excess water.
4. Lay corn kernels on a black surface (A piece of black construction paper works well).
5. Open the App.
6. Take a picture of the corn particles with a quarter for correct sizing and camera distance.
7. Snap a photo and submit in the App.
8. KPS results are sent back to you in minutes.

🐄🥣 Finding the “Goldilocks” Chop Length for Dairy Cows

Just like Goldilocks searched for what was “just right,” dairy producers should aim for the ideal forage particle size in their lactating cow rations — not too coarse, not too fine.

Research examining swallowed feed particles during eating shows that the ideal particle size closely matches the material retained on the 8-mm sieve of the Penn State Particle Separator. To optimize cow performance, aim for:

✔️ 50%–60% of ration particles retained on the 8-mm sieve

Studies have shown that corn silage particles retained on the 8-mm sieve can increase:

• Chewing time
• Milk fat production
• Energy-corrected milk

Long particles on the top sieve should be kept to a minimum because cows can sort them out or take longer to consume them. Target:

✔️ 3%–5% of particles on the top sieve

To help prevent sorting, forage pieces should be no longer than 3 inches.

For the 4-mm sieve, recommendations suggest:

✔️ 10%–20% retained

Maintaining the proper balance helps support rumen health and feed efficiency.

Achieving the “Goldilocks” chop length requires attention throughout the harvest season. Consider:

🌽 Are your chopper settings producing the desired particle size?

🌽 Do settings need adjusted as moisture and forage fiber change?

🌽 Is your feeding equipment functioning consistently?

Paying attention to these details can help create the forage profile that Goldilocks—and your cows—would approve of.
