Two OUWB medical students recently spent three weeks in Ghana through a program that shaped their empathy, global health perspective, and how they eventually will practice medicine.

Sophia Maddux and Cassandra Vyazmensky, both M2s, participated in Oakland University’s 2026 Public Health in Ghana program.

“I think this experience will make me a better physician, but day-to-day it will make me a better person, too,” said Maddux.

The group consists of three medical students who are now M2s and three who are M3s.

The M2s are Zerick Dill, Rohit Ray, and Selene Kizy. The M3s are Shreya Srivatsan, Shayaan Aqil, and Nedi Affas.

It was great to see members of the OUWB Class of 2018 reunite on the Katke-Cousins Golf Course for the fifth annual OUWB Corewell Health Classic on Aug. 17! OUWB Stephan Sharf Dean Chris Carpenter, M.D., thanked the alumni for attending and “paying it forward!”

Alumni traveled from California, Ohio, and the metro Detroit area to reconnect, enjoy a round of golf, and support medical student scholarships.

In its fifth year, the Classic has raised $200,000 to support OUWB students. We’re grateful to all of our alumni, sponsors and supporters who continue to make this impact possible.

OUWB's Medical Student Government hosted a student organization and interest group fair last week.

In a true display of the many opportunties available to students at OUWB, 40 groups participated.

"Being involved in student groups is a good way to get involved early, but not be overly committed," said Sarah Sheena, M2, vice president, MSG. "It's also a great way to meet people who have similar backgrounds and interests."

Holocaust experts from near and far were part of the first Medical Humanities and Clinical Bioethics class held for new medical students at OUWB.

One was Teresa Wontor-Cichy, Ph.D., a historian from the research center at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland. She also is a tour guide and delivers lectures for OUWB students who annually travel to Poland for the Study Trip to Auschwitz.

The other was Katie Chaka Parks, Ph.D, director, Education, The Zekelman Holocaust Center, which is in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Parks also serves as a co-leader of the study trip.

Abe Brummett, Ph.D, associate professor, Department of Foundational Medical Studies, led the class.

“The reason why I wanted to move this to the very first class is because I want the students to have a stronger historical understanding of why we talk about bioethics and medical humanities at OUWB so much in the first place,” he said.

Future physicians from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine’s 16th class were the stars Friday in one of the school’s signature events — the White Coat Ceremony.

About 1,000 attended in person or watched the livestream.

Christopher Carpenter, M.D., Stephan Sharf Dean, welcomed everyone, and delivered the keynote.

“When you are keeping your patients healthy and well, diagnosing and treating their illnesses, and easing their passing at the end of life, you will be assured of your reason why,” he said.

“And every time you look into your patients’ eyes, and listen to them intently, it will become clear that you are an OUWB-trained physician – one who is culturally aware, compassionate, and competent. Your dream achieved.”

Carpenter closed with four words of encouragement for the students:

“Your time is now!”

OUWB's 16th class had a busy Monday as its members took the next big step toward becoming physicians and began medical school.

It was the first day of orientation for the OUWB Class of 2030 — a day that started with a welcome from Christopher Carpenter, M.D., Stephan Sharf Dean, OUWB, and wrapped up with an ice cream social.

The school’s newest M1s also participated in teambuilding exercises at an on-campus ropes course, had lunch with M2s, wrote a letter to themselves (to be opened at commencement in 2030), and more.

The rest of the week also will be jam-packed as the new medical students learn all about OUWB. It culminates with the OUWB White Coat Ceremony this Friday.

Lifting student voices, fostering unity, and advocating effectively are among priorities for this year’s OUWB Medical Student Government Executive Board.

That’s according to Courtney Shields, rising M2, and president of this year’s board.

The other board members are Sarah Sheena, vice president; Rani Randell, secretary; and Francis Wells, treasurer.

“We are receptive and want to know what matters the most to people,” said Shields. “I’m somebody that is always responsive, ready to listen, and take action when things are brought to me.”
