An alum from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine has penned a comprehensive guide aimed at providing successful navigation of medical school.

Hazem Alakhras, M.D., OUWB ’23, is the author of “Med School Secrets: A Comprehensive Guide That Every Med Student Should Read.”

First published in 2023, more than 1,000 copies of the self-published book have been sold.

Alakhras is now a third-year internal medicine resident at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital (WBUH) in Royal Oak. He recently matched into a cardiology fellowship at Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital.

With the book, he says, the hope is that others can have the kind of success he’s experienced.

“I’m huge into mentorship, tutoring, and generally guiding younger classes,” he says. “I’ve been doing it since high school … it’s a huge part of who I am. I just really love helping others.”

OUWB Medical Students Continue Transformative Journey Through Poland 🇵🇱

Our 2026 Study Trip to Auschwitz began in Warsaw—a first for the program—and has now moved to Krakow, where students are deepening their understanding of Jewish history and culture before visiting memorial sites of former concentration camps later this week.

"I hope that the students take with them today a recognition of the humanity of people, the vibrancy of culture and community, and the destruction that can happen when dehumanization is not only normalized, but acted on." — Harry Smith, The Zekelman Center

Three rising M2s—Jack Evans, Jackie Thomas, and Julianne Thomas—have spent June in the anatomy lab as part of the OUWB Clinical Anatomy Summer Internship Program.

Their mission? Prosecting a body donor and creating video tutorials for the incoming Class of 2030. These supplemental materials are designed to help new students navigate the Anatomical Foundations of Clinical Practice (AFCP) course.

Julianne Thomas said she believes the new students will benefit from the supplemental materials, especially because they’re being created by those who are fresh off the course.

“We know what we liked, what we didn’t like, and what we would have wanted,” she said.

Three medical students from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine are spending extra time this month in the school’s anatomy lab as part of a unique internship.

Future doctors, big impact! 🩺✨

OUWB medical students recently traded classrooms for an elementary school in Flint to teach kids about hygiene, health, and dreaming big.

But this "Day of Action" was about more than just handwashing—it was about inspiration.

The kids learned, laughed, played games, and even got stethoscopes to keep. The energy was electric—and honestly, the medical students left just as inspired as the kids.

Sometimes all it takes is one day to change everything. 💙

Future physicians from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine stepped out of their classrooms and into an elementary school in Flint recently, spending a day teaching students about hygiene, health, and careers in medicine while offering something equally important: inspiration.

As electric bicycles continue to gain popularity among children and teenagers, safety advocates are working to address a growing concern: an increase in serious injuries involving young riders.

One of those advocates is Meghna Iyer, a rising fourth-year medical student at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, who recently participated in a nationwide effort to promote safer e-bike use through the Trainees for Child Injury Prevention (T4CIP) program.

On many Saturday mornings, OUWB med student Drew Lewis heads to a Detroit chapel — not to study, but to play piano alongside a choir. 🎶

No lectures. No exams. Just him, the keys, and the music.

His story is a powerful reminder that chasing a demanding career doesn't mean leaving your passions behind. In fact, holding onto them might be the very thing that helps you succeed.

On many Saturday mornings, rising OUWB third-year medical student Drew Lewis heads to a Detroit chapel and focuses on something other than studying, lectures, exams, and becoming a doctor.

Nearly two dozen medical students from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine recently visited The Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills as they prepare for a profound journey—a study trip to Auschwitz.

This visit on April 15 marked what one OUWB official called “the first big step” before their trip to Poland (June 18-25).

At OUWB, medical students are going beyond textbooks to learn how to identify malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and other nutrition-related issues — through a new hands-on skills session called the Nutrition Focused Physical Exam.

Part of the Art & Practice of Medicine (APM) curriculum, this session takes place at the Clinical Skills Training & Simulation Center and gives students the chance to practice head-to-toe nutrition-focused exams on standardized patients — and each other.

From examining hair, eyes, and oral cavity to assessing muscle mass and subcutaneous fat, students are learning what to look for and how to document findings that could change a patient’s outcome.

Being able to identify malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and other nutrition-related issues is a regular part of being a doctor — and the focus of a new skills session offered by OUWB.

Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine students recently participated in a high-impact birthing simulation event at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak.

Hosted by the OB-GYN Interest Group (OGIG) at the Applebaum Simulation Learning Center, the event gave 25 medical students the chance to rotate through four hands-on stations — from C-sections to forceps- and vacuum-assisted deliveries.

Students learned suturing, reviewed anatomy, and practiced delivering a model baby — all while being guided by OB-GYN residents and physicians, including OUWB alumnae like Parisa Bastani, M.D. '24.

Betty Judah, M2 and OGIG president, said the event was created to inspire curiosity and confidence in obstetrics and gynecology.

“Experiences like this not only help us become better students, but they also set the foundation for being better doctors for our future patients.”

OUWB’s Global Health Team recently brought together students, faculty, and guests around a powerful idea: global health isn’t just about working outside the U.S. — it’s about bringing the lessons home.

Several medical students shared how international experiences transformed their perspectives. They worked in resource-limited hospitals, saw surgery through a “low-resource, high-ingenuity” lens, and experienced what one student called a “rediscovery of purpose.”

Stories like these are why OUWB integrates global health across all four years — and offers opportunities to study in places like Ghana, Poland, Mexico, and more. These aren’t just trips. They’re life-changing moments that shape future physicians.

As one OUWB official put it: “This opportunity is going to change their future careers — and they will teach countless others.”

OUWB’s World Health Day recently featured students, faculty, and guests involved in the global practice of medicine, with a common throughline: one person can make a difference, regardless of location.
