Forget motivation. Or perfection. Or comparison.
The magic words for success in achieving your goals are: Acceptance
Discipline and
Consistency .
Acceptance :
1/ Accepting your nature. Your height, your weight, your genes. Your shape.
For me, I have accepted that I’ll never have lean legs. I’ll probably have cellulite forever.
For more than 50 years (yes, my pediatrician convinced my parents to put me on a diet at 4 years old!) I killed myself trying to lose weight … but despite crazy diets, my legs stayed the same shape! I never wore short shorts, or above the knee skirts or dresses until this summer! At 56 years old! It’s both a sad and a happy story…
But now I have accepted my nature. I do the best I can with what I have! And I’m wearing those shorts!
2/ Acceptance of who you are also means accepting what you need to do to be the best you can be! Accepting that you need to live a certain lifestyle even if it’s “unfair” . Don’t fight it anymore…
For me, accepting to eat a low carb diet and to exercise 30 minutes 5 times a week! Most of the time 🙂 but indulging with the occasional ice cream! That’s what makes it sustainable!
Discipline. Decide what you need to do to reach your goals (make it realistic!) and be precise: what days/at what time. And abide by this decision. Even / especially when you don’t feel like it. For me: daily at 12 pm, 30 minutes of circuit training (cardio with weights) 5 times a week.
And find a way to be accountable! Whether to a friend, a coach, a partner, a child, an online community or by journaling! Accountability is key!
Finally: consistency. Not perfection. Not all or nothing. Just being consistent with your nutrition and workouts. That’s what really makes a difference. Bad days will happen. Not the end of the world. Just go back on track.
I finally understood that after almost 50 years of crash dieting and yo-yoing, my body was done. Especially while going through menopause.
I had to change my mindset. Accept my nature and the lifestyle I needed to adopt to be the best version of myself. And happier!
That’s how I have finally lost almost 40 lbs over 16 months. “Only” 1/2 lb a week. Slow and steady. In the past, I’d have given up the first week! Too slow! But this time, I ACCEPTED that it was what I needed to do to be who I wanted to become!
And rather than focusing too much on the number on the scale, I also changed my body composition, inverting the body fat number with the muscle mass! Because now it’s all about health, longevity and feeling good about myself!
And I achieved that by changing my perspective and my mindset.
