Orofacial pain refers to pain and related symptoms felt in the face, mouth, jaws, head, and neck. It may arise from the muscles, temporomandibular joints, nerves, teeth, or surrounding tissues, and can present as aching, sharp, burning, or pressure-like discomfort.

Because these structures share complex nerve pathways, orofacial pain often overlaps with headaches, jaw dysfunction, tooth pain, ear symptoms, and sleep-related breathing problems, making an accurate diagnosis essential.

The trigeminal nerve (also known as the fifth cranial nerve) is the main sensory nerve carrying information from the face to the brain.

When it's functioning properly, it transmits touch, temperature and pain from the skin, teeth, gums, lips, ears and even your eyes.

If it is damaged you may experience numbness, or in rare conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia, significant pain.
