Persistent pain after dental treatment can be one of the most frustrating challenges in clinical practice – but what if the pain isn’t odontogenic?

In this re-release of our third ever episode of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain Podcast, Dr. Gary Klasser discusses how to recognize persistent idiopathic facial pain and painful post-traumatic trigeminal neuropathy, differentiate neuropathic pain from dental pathology, and determine when additional dental treatment may do more harm than good.

Whether you are a general dentists, specialist, or allied health professional, you’ll gain practical insights into diagnosis, management, and appropriate referral for patients with persistent post-treatment pain.

MYTH: TMD is simply a problem of occlusion.

FACT: TMD is multifactorial and often requires a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to diagnosis and management.

The TEAM Course helps clinicians understand the complexities of TMD through evidence-based education and practical training.

Because patients deserve more than one-size-fits-all care.

How long have you specialized in treatment of TMD and other Orofacial Pain conditions? - 26 years

What do you wish more clinicians knew about TMD?
That most TMDs resolve with little to no therapy over time; non invasive, conservative therapy should also be tried first. The first referrals should not be to the orthodontist, prosthodontist or oral surgeon unless those practitioners are well trained and committed to conservative therapy.

What do you want prospective learners to know about the TEAM Course?
It is an outstanding opportunity to provide an evidence based background to interested clinicians to help them on their road to mastery of these concepts.
