Practical Nostalgia: a review of Practical Magic 2

This review comes from the perspective of a book loyalist and reader of Practical Magic. Of course, books will always have more detail than a movie, but removing major subplots seemed to make the film simultaneously speed up and drag. The exclusion of Antonia’s girlfriend—while a minor difference without a huge impact on the main plot—left me wishing for simple representation. Furthermore, the removal of Vincent and a more detailed narrative made the film feel like an odd skip. I realize a single film could not provide all the background from books two or three (the prequels exploring Franny, Jet, and Maria), but omitting those elements kept the characters much flatter than they are written.
Ultimately, I longed for more depth, even when my nostalgia was being met with midnight margaritas.

On a positive note, the soundtrack and music were quite immersive; I caught myself noticing the subtle breeze in the trees and the tweeting of birds when not startled by a raven call. The cinematography was beautiful, featuring higher-quality effects that helped place the magic right into our current reality. To put it simply: I am disappointed, but Practical Magic will always be one of my favorites.

1. Let things go! When you spin the fiber is taken in on the bobbin. If you do not let it go you run the risk of over twisting or breaking your fiber. In life I try to do the same. Once I exert my energy on a decision, I do not dwell on waiting for the outcome. I just trust I did what I could.

2. Have Patience! Many nights when I started spinning ended in a hazy fog of swear words and giving up. By taking the time to keep trying again I finished my first bobbin of yarn last night.

3. Ask for help! Instead of doomscrolling Internet forums I relied on my friends who also spin and my partner for help. My friends gave me pointers that instantly improved my spinning. Like loosening the brake and loosening my grip. My partner in my bouts of frustration helped me many a time with a hold or simple detangle. It just took my humility to ask.

4. Trust myself! Obviously it took others to get me where I am in this process and I’m extremely grateful. I had to learn to trust myself by not giving up. I know my abilities and drive. It just took multiple attempts. You know if something is for you or not. The carding that went into this is definitely not my favorite but spinning is definitely nice and relaxing once you get the hang of it.

All of this still is whimsy to me. Whimsy isn’t always perfect and happy. It’s learning as well. Follow me for more great tips and opportunities to seek whimsy in your daily life.

The magic of just one year and 4 months of HRT. Last year I had just went through one of the toughest periods of my life. Being ousted from the career I loved and cared about by people who didn’t even know me. Now I am taking my power back. I never lost to begin with. “The Fool’s Observer”

The Fool is always a surprising and jostling card or realignment. We don’t talk enough though about the observer that witnesses the fool. They have all the resources they need and are being observed as they start their journey. Not every leap is a solo task.

Here we watch out the window as the fool makes their decision. They are outside their humble home with their little protectors and everything they could need. They are aware of the fresh harvest and the cozy purrs of their fur babies. It is the need to be encouraged and empowered. The want to be witnessed by the observer is as heavy as the setting sun.
