Urinary incontinence is a common pelvic floor dysfunction the reflects how the body manages pressure, movement, and coordination during daily activities 🫁

It is estimated to affect approximately 25 million adults in the United States, though true prevalence varies depending on definitions and reporting methods.

UI can occur across the lifespan and becomes more common with increasing age, particularly in women.

Symptoms may be temporary or chronic, ranging from occasional leakage to more significant changes in bladder control.

It may be associated with a range of contributing factors, including pregnancy and childbirth, hormonal changes during menopause, urinary tract infections, medication use, and certain medical conditions or illness.

Because bladder control relies on coordinated function between multiple systems, presentations can vary widely between individuals based on underlying factors and functional demands.

Understanding urinary incontinence in this way shifts focus from isolated symptoms toward the underlying contributions and how the system is functioning as a whole 🔄

You shouldn’t have to piece together your symptoms without clear context.

This evening with .pt.llc & explores how pelvic floor health and functional nutrition work together and why looking at these systems together can change the way we understand chronic, complex symptoms.

When the body is viewed as an interconnected system, patterns that once felt unclear often start to make more sense.

This is especially relevant for those navigating:
Endometriosis, PCOS, POTS, Ehlers-Danlos Symdrome, Interstitial Cystitis…and anyone looking for a more complete understanding of persistent symptoms that haven’t fully resolved.

Pelvic floor dysfunction is an umbrella term used to describe changes in how the pelvic floor functions and coordinates within the body.

Because the pelvic floor is involved in support, pressure management, movement, and control, dysfunction does not always look the same for person to person 🫁

Instead, symptoms often reflect how the body is adapting to everyday demands over time.

Understanding pelvic floor dysfunction means looking beyond isolated symptoms and considering how the system is functioning as a whole 🔄

Pelvic floor dysfunction is often associated with one population, but pelvic health concerns can affect people across many different ages, activity levels, and life stages.

In pelvic health physical therapy, we look beyond just symptoms. Factors such as movement demands, exercise habits, injury history, pressure management, hormonal changes, and daily activities can all influence how the pelvic floor functions over time.

Because pelvic floor dysfunction can present differently from person to person, understanding who it can affect is an important step toward reducing stigma and encouraging more informed conversations about pelvic health.

During Pelvic Health Awareness Month, we’re continuing to share education to help make these conversations more approachable, inclusive, and better understood.

Understanding pelvic health is best done by looking at how the body functions during real movement and daily activity, not just at rest.

Small changes in how the body manages pressure, coordination, or support can offer important insight into pelvic floor function. These changes are often most noticeable during activities like lifting, coughing, exercise, or prolonged standing.

While common, these patterns are not something to ignore. They can reflect how the pelvic floor is working within the larger movement system.

Next, we’ll explore who pelvic floor dysfunction can affect and why it is more widespread than many people realize.
