Inroads To Opportunities Empowering people with disabilities in their pursuit of employment, independence and life skills. We have grown from serving 4 individuals to over 500 annually.

Occupational Center of Union County (OCUC) was founded in March of 1959 as a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 agency serving the greater Union County area. We are committed to providing vocational preparation, transition from school to work, job placement and mental health services to individuals with all types of disabilities from ages 16 on up. We have established relationships with 100's of local businesses, schools, hospitals, community agencies, and families. Starting in 2015, we will be doing business as Inroads to Opportunities. Inroads is certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). We are an approved provider of the NJ Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, the NJ Division of Development Disabilities and the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired. We are licensed by the state of New Jersey to provide mental health partial care services under the Division of Mental Health and Addictions Services. We are an approved Medicaid provider and an approved Employment Network under the Ticket to Work Social Security initiative.

🎓 We are proud to announce that Inroads to Opportunities has been awarded grant funding to expand our Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS), helping students with disabilities build the skills, confidence, and experience needed to prepare for life beyond the classroom!

Through this exciting opportunity, Inroads will work with schools to provide valuable vocational and life skills training, career exploration, workplace readiness instruction, and paid internship opportunities that introduce students to real-world employment experiences.

Our goal is simple: to help young people discover their strengths, develop greater independence, and take meaningful steps toward their future careers.

Even better, our team can deliver services directly at participating schools, eliminating the need for students to travel to our facility!

We look forward to partnering with schools throughout New Jersey to help students turn their potential into opportunity.

Last week, members of the Inroads to Opportunities Supported Employment team attended the APSE Convention, joining fellow professionals and advocates dedicated to advancing inclusive employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

The Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE) is a national organization committed to ensuring that individuals with disabilities have access to meaningful employment, competitive wages, and opportunities to thrive in inclusive workplaces.

At Inroads, our Supported Employment team puts that mission into action every day, helping individuals discover their strengths, secure meaningful employment, and achieve greater independence in their communities.

Last week, Inroads to Opportunities proudly celebrated two outstanding members of our team at the 2026 ACCSES NJ STAR Conference, held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City.

This year's conference theme, “Striving Together, Achieving Results: Revolutionizing Employment Opportunities,”highlighted the dedication of professionals who make a lasting difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities.

🏆 Kenneth Williams – Outstanding Job Coach, State Use Contract

As Site Manager for Inroads Janitorial Enterprise, Kenneth has demonstrated exceptional leadership by strengthening workplace training, improving accountability, and empowering employees to develop essential job skills.

More than a job coach, Kenneth is a mentor who builds confidence, recognizes potential, and helps individuals achieve greater independence and success in the workforce.

🏆 Linda Galarreta MSW – STAR Award for Grassroots Advocacy

Linda's dedication to advocacy extends far beyond her role at Inroads. As President of the Roselle Special Education Parent Advocacy Group and an active leader in numerous community initiatives, she has worked tirelessly to promote inclusion, accessibility, and opportunity for individuals with disabilities and their families.

From establishing the Different Abilities Field Day to championing educational advocacy and community engagement throughout New Jersey, Linda continues to inspire meaningful change.

🎨 Did You Know?

With the support of the Union County Board of County Commissioners HEART Grant, Inroads to Opportunities is able to offer a weekly art program for our participants!

Recently, our Transition School-to-Work students got creative in the classroom with a string art project.

Art provides so much more than an opportunity to create. Projects like these encourage self-expression, creativity, focus, fine motor skills, and confidence while giving our students another way to learn and connect.

We’re grateful to the Union County Board of County Commissioners for helping make these enriching experiences possible for the individuals we serve.

🍂 A Perfect Fall Day with TransitionPLUS! 🍁

Our TransitionPLUS participants recently enjoyed a beautiful fall day exploring the Trailside Nature & Science Centerin the Watchung Reservation!

From enjoying the crisp autumn weather to exploring nature and spending time together in the community, it was a great opportunity to learn, connect, and experience everything the season has to offer.

At Inroads, TransitionPLUS helps young adults build the skills and confidence needed for greater independence. Community-based experiences like this give participants opportunities to practice social skills, explore new environments, strengthen relationships, and become more comfortable navigating the world around them.

Because learning doesn’t only happen in the classroom. Sometimes, it happens on the trail. 🍁🥾

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This month, Inroads to Opportunities joins communities across the country in recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month and honoring everyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer.

We stand with those currently undergoing treatment, celebrate survivors, remember those we have lost, and recognize the families, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocates who provide strength and support along the way.

Throughout October, we encourage everyone to stay informed, prioritize their health, and support the people and organizations working toward greater awareness, early detection, treatment, and hope.

From all of us at Inroads, we wear pink in support of the fighters, survivors, families, and loved ones. 💗

💼 October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

At Inroads to Opportunities, disability employment isn’t something we recognize for just one month. It has been at the heart of our mission for more than six decades.

Throughout October, we join organizations across the country in celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and recognizing the skills, talents, and contributions of people with disabilities in the workforce.

Through vocational training, Supported Employment, Extended Employment, Pre-Employment Transition Services, TransitionPLUS, and partnerships with employers throughout our community, Inroads helps individuals develop skills, explore career opportunities, and work toward greater independence.

We also recognize the employers, community partners, families, and professionals who understand that an inclusive workforce is a stronger workforce.

This month, we look forward to sharing more of the people, programs, and partnerships that are Making Inroads toward a more inclusive workforce.

🦒🐢 TransitionPLUS Takes on Turtle Back Zoo! 🐘🦁

Last week, participants from our TransitionPLUS program enjoyed a day of exploration, learning, and fun at Turtle Back Zoo!

Trips like this are about much more than getting out into the community. They give our young adults opportunities to practice social skills, communication, decision-making, independence, and community navigation in real-world settings while building friendships and creating great memories along the way.

Inroads’ TransitionPLUS program is designed for young adults ages 21–25+ as they navigate the important transition from school into adulthood. Through hands-on experiences, vocational training, life-skills development, community-based activities, and individualized support, participants work toward greater independence and prepare for their next steps in life and employment.

Thank you to Turtle Back Zoo for providing a wonderful setting for another memorable TransitionPLUS adventure.
