On Thursday, FDNY EMS members responded to a cardiac arrest involving a 15-year-old patient at a school in Queens.

Upon arrival, EMTs Alexis Torres and Justin Sarapaivanit, both of Station 45, found school staff performing CPR and utilizing an on-site AED, which had delivered three shocks prior to their arrival. The EMTs immediately assumed patient care, confirmed the patient remained in cardiac arrest, and continued lifesaving resuscitation efforts.

Shortly afterward, members of Engine 325 arrived to assist. While preparing the patient for rapid transport, EMTs Torres and Sarapaivanit reassessed the patient and observed signs of Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC), including the return of spontaneous breathing.

Rescue Paramedics Kayla Pasquarello and Meagan Valicenti, along with Lieutenant Erin Doyle, stabilized the patient, performed cardiac monitoring, and alerted the hospital about their pending arrival.

The FDNY commends the quick actions and seamless teamwork displayed by all of our EMS and Firefighters on scene. Their efforts, combined with the rapid recognition of cardiac arrest and immediate CPR provided by school staff, played a critical role in helping save a young life.

Awesome to see Elk Grove Fire Department on Fox News teaching high schoolers how to stop the bleeding! This is exactly the kind of training that saves lives – and it starts with education.

At Accurate CPR, we bring Stop the Bleed training to schools, businesses, and organizations throughout the area. Knowing how to control severe bleeding is a skill anyone can learn in under an hour, and it can make the difference between life and death before EMS arrives.

If you want to bring Stop the Bleed training to your school, workplace, or group, give us a call or send us a message. Let’s keep this momentum going.

A 16-year-old collapsed at a Huntley High School track meet Monday night and went into cardiac arrest in front of hundreds of people. Thanks to an athletic trainer who grabbed the AED immediately, two off-duty firefighters in the stands who jumped in, and proper CPR with one shock from the AED, that young man is alive today.

This is exactly why AEDs need to be accessible and why everyone around them needs to be trained.

The firefighter on scene said it best: “Quick early access to AED equipment and CPR – that’s what saves lives.”

This happens at schools, gyms, offices, and community events every single day. The difference between life and death is almost always the same: a trained person and an AED within reach.

At Accurate CPR, we provide CPR and AED training for schools, businesses, and organizations across the Chicago area – and we help facilities manage their AED programs so equipment is always ready when it counts.
If your school, workplace, or organization needs CPR training or help with your AED program, reach out today.
