🚨 The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA) engaged directly with the White House last week to advocate for dermatologists on proposed payment policy issues.

AADA President Dr. Murad Alam, Board member Dr. Amy Derick, and Director of Health Policy and Payment Sharmila Sandhu, JD, met with the Domestic Policy Council (DPC) as members of the Same Day Care Coalition.

The discussion addressed the proposed 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule reimbursement cuts and proposed changes to the policy. The DPC oversees the ex*****on of domestic policy decisions across areas such as education, healthcare, and energy.

Kavita Mariwalla, MD, FAAD, also joined them as a member of the Same Day Care Coalition and President of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.

A few days later, Dr. Alam met with the DPC to discuss issues affecting dermatologists under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, an opportunity that allowed dermatology's concerns to reach White House officials.

An article in JAAD evaluated the association between the use of oral niacinamide and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with multiple nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs).

In a retrospective cohort study, patients with two or more NMSCs or bullous pemphigoid who began taking oral niacinamide, 500 mg or more, were matched 1:1 with niacinamide-naive controls.

Niacinamide use was associated with reduced risk of ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) (0.9% vs. 1.6%) and peripheral vascular disease (4.7% vs. 6.3%). Cardiac arrest risk was also reduced, although it was not statistically significant. No significant differences were found in non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (2.6% vs. 2.5%) or type 2 myocardial infarction (1.2% vs. 0.9%).

According to the authors, their findings suggest that niacinamide supplementation is not only safe from a cardiovascular perspective but also may be associated with a significant reduction in STEMI incidence which only persisted in patients with a history of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease despite more than 75% of the overall study population already taking a lipid-lowering statin medication.

The AAD Cochrane Scholarship award program is founded on the goal of expanding the training in — and reach of — evidence-based medicine in dermatology.

Two Cochrane Scholars are awarded annually to develop a systematic review on a topic that supports clinical practice guideline development. Potential topics currently under consideration include chronic pruritus and atypical nevi.

The Academy considers a Cochrane systematic review to be the gold standard and supports training in this area. As a Scholar, the Academy will support your completion of online Cochrane Interactive Learning modules on conducting a systematic review before the commencement of your review.

The Academy will also support and expect scholars’ attendance at the Cochrane Colloquium, an in-person learning event, during award years in which the event is held. Each scholar will ultimately prepare and submit a publication-quality systematic review for consideration for publication in JAAD.

The AAD is offering financial support to dermatology residents engaged in quality improvement projects that help meet requirements for ACGME accreditation.

Receive up to $2,000 and recognition for the valuable work that is a required part of today’s training. Funds can help cover expenses of data collection, materials and supplies, and even travel to the AAD Annual Meeting for a presentation.

Selected applicants will be invited to reveal their quality improvement projects at the 2027 AAD Annual Meeting.

An article published in the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology evaluated the efficacy of spironolactone 100 mg daily for female pattern hair loss in premenopausal women.

Forty-eight women aged 21 to 45 years were randomly assigned to receive spironolactone 100 mg or placebo once daily for 24 weeks. Twice-daily minoxidil 3% solution was used for all participants. Efficacy was assessed by changes in hair density and diameter.

After treatment, hair density and diameter increased significantly in both treatment groups. The spironolactone group showed a greater increase in changes from baseline of terminal hair counts and hair diameters compared to the placebo group.

The authors concluded that oral spironolactone showed an additive effect to topical minoxidil in premenopausal women with mild-to-moderate female pattern hair loss.

Menstrual irregularities (37.5%) were the most common adverse event and were significantly higher in the spironolactone group.
