📢 The AADA applauds the U.S. FDA for approving (BEMT), the first new sunscreen ingredient approved in the United States in more than 20 years.

We believe this approval marks an important public health step by expanding access to safe and effective sunscreens for U.S. consumers.

Beginning Aug. 9, 2026, sunscreen manufacturers can include bemotrizinol as an active ingredient in sunscreens. Europe approved the ingredient in 2000.

The FDA announcement follows longstanding and ongoing advocacy by the Academy and is largely due to the passage of the SAFE Sunscreen Act of 2025. AAD member Rep. John Joyce, MD, FAAD (R-PA) had an instrumental role in the passage of this legislation by Congress.

Authors of a study published in JAAD developed an expert consensus for the use of 5-fluorouracil/calcipotriene (5-FU/C) for treating actinic keratoses (AK), squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCCis), and superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC).

Of 18 preliminary statements, 11 topics achieved greater than 70% consensus on the first round, six required further revision before achieving consensus, and one statement was excluded due to limited evidence (use of 5-FU/C in ge***al and periocular regions).

The recommended treatment for AKs with 5-FU/C was four to five days twice daily for face/neck, and seven to 10 days twice daily for scalp, trunk, and extremities, or for face/neck if initial regimen is unsuccessful. For extensive or rapidly recurring AKs, physicians may recommend scheduled treatments every three to six months.

5-FU/C may be used for sBCC, but data are limited so the panel did not recommend duration of treatment, although they added that close clinical follow-up is advised. Treatment of SCCis is gaining acceptance, with the panel recommending seven to 10 days twice daily for scalp, trunk, and extremities. No specific recommendation was made regarding formulation.

The New American Cancer Society (ACS) data predicts a growing rate of melanoma incidence and a slight increase in deaths in the United States this year.

According to the report, skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S. “More than 5 million cases of the most common types, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are diagnosed each year, although the actual number is unknown because these cases are not required to be reported to cancer registries.”

Invasive melanoma accounts for only 1% of all skin cancer cases but the majority of deaths. Melanoma mortality has also decreased over the past decade, both for men (3% per year) and women (2% per year), which the ACS credits to advancements in treatment.

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin conditions diagnosed and treated by dermatologists in the United States and worldwide.

In recognition of , review the AAD's clinical guidelines on the management of acne vulgaris (published in JAAD), which provide evidence-based recommendations for treating adults, adolescents, and preadolescents (aged 9 years or older) from the perspectives of dermatologists, clinicians who treat acne, and patients.

Authors examined evidence from a systematic review of the literature based on:
✅ acne grading and classification;
✅ laboratory testing;
✅ topical therapies, systemic antibiotics, hormonal agents, oral isotretinoin, physical modalities, complementary and alternative medicine;
✅ dietary and environmental interventions.
