This came out yesterday, and seeing this part of my story in print feels a little surreal.
I thought I was planting a garden. I didn’t realize I was also finding my way home.
When I moved back to Indiana after twenty years away, I was returning to the same small town where I spent the first ten years of my life. As a little girl, my bedroom overlooked my mom’s garden. It was one of my favorite places to be.
I lost my mom in 2014, and when I finally had the opportunity to plant a garden of my own, I wasn’t prepared for what it would open in me. Somehow, tending that little piece of land connected me back to her, to my grandmothers, to the little girl I had been, and to a part of myself I didn’t realize I had been missing.
What started as a garden has become so much more.
It has changed the way I pay attention. The way I think about relationship and reciprocity. The way I understand growth, loss, patience, and beginning again. And it continues to remind me that we aren’t separate from nature. We are part of it.
So much of what I’m building with Rooted Wild Hearts has grown from that same place. A desire to help people reconnect with their bodies, with plants, with the natural world, and with parts of themselves they may have stopped listening to or lost somewhere along the way.
I’m grateful to The Garden Society started by Melissa J. Leslie for giving me the space to share this story, and for seeing that a garden can hold so much more than what we plant in it. 🌱
Sometimes we plant something without knowing what it will give back to us.
