ADHD Is More Than “Can My Child Sit Still?” 🧠

ADHD doesn't have one simple test.

A thorough evaluation looks at the whole child.

Attention. Impulsivity. Activity level. Sleep. Anxiety. Learning. Development. School performance. Medical history. What parents see at home. What teachers see at school.

Why?

Because sleep disorders, anxiety, depression and certain learning disabilities can produce symptoms that resemble ADHD—and some conditions can occur alongside ADHD.

At GAIP, we may also consider additional laboratory or functional information when clinically appropriate as part of understanding a child's broader health picture.

But it's important to understand that neurotransmitter testing does not diagnose ADHD. ADHD remains a clinical diagnosis based on established criteria and information from multiple settings.

We don't want to simply ask:

“Does this child have ADHD?”

We also want to understand:

“What does this particular child need?”

🎨 A Little Art, A Lot of Heart at GAIP 💚

We had a special guest at GAIP! Local artist Jennifer Mehling () spent time in our office creating beautiful artwork for our patients and families to enjoy.

But we especially love the story behind her art.

Jennifer shares that during a season when she didn’t have words for everything she was experiencing, creativity became an outlet. And in her own words, art wasn’t what healed her—Jesus did. Art was simply one of the tools He used as she found restoration and learned to see beauty again.

We know many of the children and families who walk through our doors are navigating journeys of their own. Sometimes beauty, creativity, faith, and a welcoming space can bring a little encouragement along the way.

Lyme Disease Can Look Different in Children. 🕷️

A tick bite isn't always noticed.

And Lyme disease doesn't always begin with the classic “bull's-eye” rash parents expect.

Early symptoms can include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle or joint aches and swollen lymph nodes, with or without a rash. CDC estimates the characteristic erythema migrans rash occurs in roughly 70–80% of infected people.

Evaluating Lyme disease involves more than checking off symptoms. A provider considers the child's symptoms, potential tick exposure, travel or geography, other possible diagnoses, and appropriate testing. Antibody testing can also be falsely negative early in infection.

At GAIP, Kimberly Steinberg, APRN, CPNP-PC, has a special interest in pediatric Lyme disease, works with families navigating these concerns, and uses advanced lab testing not usually done in a regular pediatrician's office.

When a new baby arrives, a lot of attention naturally goes to baby and mom. But becoming a dad is a big transition, too.

You may be learning how to soothe a crying newborn, running on very little sleep, supporting your partner, figuring out feeding schedules—and wondering if you're doing any of it right.

You are an important part of your baby's care.

At GAIP, our newborn visits are a place for dads to ask questions, learn, and feel more confident caring for their new baby, too.

Breast Awareness Month: Let's Include Our Teen Girls 🎀

Breast awareness isn't only a conversation for adult women.

Puberty brings breast changes that can be confusing—or even scary—when a teen doesn't know what's normal.

During development:

🎀 One breast may begin developing before the other.
🎀 Breast buds can feel firm or tender.
🎀 One breast may temporarily be larger than the other.
🎀 Tenderness can occur as hormones change.

These are common parts of puberty. The AAP notes that breast development commonly begins between ages 8 and 13 and that uneven development and tenderness are often normal.

But adolescence is also a great time for moms to teach their daughters to know their bodies and feel comfortable speaking up when something changes.

A new or persistent lump, significant pain, redness or warmth, unusual discharge, or a breast change that concerns your teen deserves a conversation with her healthcare provider.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let's give our daughters something they'll use for life:
