Sleep doesn't just affect your brain.
It affects your gut too.
The relationship runs both ways.

Poor sleep can alter the composition and activity of your gut microbiome, while your gut bacteria produce compounds that may influence sleep quality.

Certain bacteria are involved in pathways tied to serotonin and GABA, 2 neurotransmitters that regulate relaxation and sleep.

Your microbiome also operates on its own 24-hour rhythm. Irregular sleep, late-night eating, and shift work can disrupt that rhythm, much like jet lag disrupts yours.

Short-chain fatty acids offer a clear example.
These are compounds your gut bacteria produce when fermenting fiber.

In a 2024 study, women with longer sleep duration had higher levels of these beneficial compounds in their stool. Suggesting that sleep may shape your gut's output as much as your diet does.

2 practical starting points:

1- Power down 30 to 60 minutes before bed.

Screens delay sleep more than most people realize, largely because of the time they consume, not just the light they emit.

2- Try a weighted blanket.

The gentle pressure is thought to activate the body's rest-and-digest response. Research on insomnia is still developing, but several studies point to real benefits for anxiety and sleep onset.

You don't need the $2 packet in your water.
You need to drink more water.

Electrolyte powders have quietly become a wellness default.

Gym bags, TikTok, the checkout line at Whole Foods.

The pitch is simple:
Better hydration, more energy, faster recovery.
The problem is that most people reaching for them don't actually have an electrolyte problem. They have a "I forgot to drink water today" problem.

Here's what the research actually shows:

Sodium, potassium, and the other minerals in those packets are already covered through a normal diet.

Your body isn't short on electrolytes. It's short on consistent fluid intake, and that's a different fix entirely.

Underhydration itself is worth taking seriously.

Studies following people over 6 to 15 years have linked chronically low fluid intake with higher rates of type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and reduced kidney function.

That's not a reason to add electrolytes. It's a reason to drink more water.

So when do electrolytes actually matter?

A narrower window than the marketing suggests:

- Intense exercise lasting an hour or more
- Multiple hours of outdoor activity
- Exercise in serious heat or humidity

Outside of those conditions, plain water covers it and skips the added sugar that comes with most powdered mixes.

One more thing worth knowing:

Your thirst signal lags behind your actual hydration need.

By the time you feel thirsty, you're already behind. A simple fix is building water into a routine you already have, like pairing your morning coffee with a full glass of water.

The takeaway isn't that electrolytes are a scam. It's that they're solving a problem most people don't have, while the actual problem of not drinking enough water in the first place goes unaddressed.

August is National Wellness Month!
We talk a lot here about nutrition and gut health.
This month, we're turning to the other pillars of wellness, starting with movement.

Most of us sit for 9 to 11 hours a day!

More than half our waking hours. Sitting is not "the new smoking," that comparison does not hold up scientifically. But it is not without consequence either.

When leg muscles stay inactive for hours, they stop clearing glucose and fat from the bloodstream the way they do during movement. Blood flow to the legs slows. Over years, that accumulates.

The answer is not necessarily more time at the gym.

A 2026 study of over 11,000 adults found that five-minute movement breaks.

Taken every 30, 60, or 120 minutes reduced fatigue and improved mood without affecting work performance.

Hourly breaks offered the most practical benefit.

No equipment needed. A walk to refill your water bottle counts.

Most people shopping for an at-home gut test are comparing the wrong things.
They compare price.
Or turnaround time.

What actually determines whether a result is useful is which of three completely different categories the kit belongs to.

Disease screening kits look for specific markers tied to a condition.

Composition sequencing kits tell you which bacterial species are present. Functional activity kits measure what that community is actually producing.

Not who is there, but what they are doing!

The 3rd category is where the interesting science is. In the Integrative Human Microbiome Project, disease activity showed up as functional disruption, shifts in microbial transcription and metabolite pools that a species list alone would not have captured.

There is also something almost nobody selling a mail-in kit volunteers. Stool continues to ferment after it leaves the body. If your sample spends two days in a delivery vehicle, part of what the lab measures is the trip.

Before you buy, ask 4 questions:

- What is measured, composition or activity?
- Where does analysis happen?
- Is there peer-reviewed work on that specific measurement?
- What is the regulatory status?

The answer to those questions matters more than the price.

Most breakfast cereals were invented as a health food.
They haven't been that for a long time.

The majority of cereals and granolas on the market today are high in added sugar, high in refined starch, and low in fiber.

That combination actively works against gut health.

Research shows excess sugar disrupts the intestinal barrier, increases gut permeability, and shifts the microbiome toward dysbiosis.

Fiber does the opposite!

Gut bacteria ferment it into short-chain fatty acids that strengthen the gut lining and reduce inflammation.

The gut

Most people managing menopause symptoms think about hormones.
Few think about their gut.

They recently sat down with Unstuck Collection wtih to talk about the gut-brain axis, and why brain fog, mood shifts, and memory lapses during menopause might have more to do with your microbiome than you'd expect.

The short version:

Gut bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids that lower inflammation, and inflammation is directly tied to cognition and mood.

When estrogen declines, the gut microbiome shifts too, sometimes in ways that affect everything from cardiovascular risk to how clearly you think.

Does taking a GLP-1 medication change your gut microbiome?
2 recent studies offer different pieces of the answer.
A 2025 systematic review found the evidence genuinely mixed. How does it compare to 2026?

Some studies observed increases in Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium associated with metabolic health.

Others found the opposite, or no change at all.

The review traced the inconsistency back to study design:
Trial lengths ranged from 8 weeks to a full year, measurement methods varied, and many participants were also taking metformin...

A drug already known to reshape the microbiome on its own.

A 2026 study addressed many of those limitations.

Researchers followed people with type 2 diabetes for 12 months, collecting stool samples at four separate points rather than 1 or 2.

Their finding:
Semaglutide itself did not produce significant changes to overall microbiome composition or diversity. The shifts that did appear tracked more closely with weight loss and lifestyle changes than with the drug itself.

What neither study measured, however, was function.

Both looked at which bacteria are present, not how metabolically active they are.

We track that second question with f***l pH, a functional marker of microbial activity, not just a snapshot of which species are present.

These pairings show up in cultures that never had contact with each other, and that is not a coincidence.

Long before anyone knew what an amino acid was, people figured out that grains and legumes complete each other.

Whole grains run low in one essential amino acid, legumes run low in another, and together they cover for each other's gaps.

They also had no concept of ultra-processed food.
That's not a coincidence.

In 1776, the American diet was rich in whole grains, legumes, seasonal vegetables, and fermented foods.

This wasn't due to an understanding of gut science, but because it was the only way to eat before refrigeration and industrialization.

Thomas Jefferson, for example, grew dozens of fruit and vegetable varieties. Indigenous communities cultivated the "Three Sisters"

- Corn
- Beans
- Squash

A system that provided complementary amino acids and diverse fibers. Immigrant communities fermented vegetables, dairy, and grains for preservation, not for health trends.

Modern research confirms what these traditions produced: dietary diversity leads to microbial diversity, which in turn drives health.

Today, 95% of Americans don't get enough daily fiber, and gut microbiome diversity has declined in industrialized nations. The chronic diseases linked to this imbalance are now major health challenges.

The future of American health may not be a new discovery, but a return to what we once knew.
