🇭🇹 HAITI: A REVOLUTION THAT CHANGED THE WORLD 🇭🇹🌎
As a Haitian, I feel immense pride sharing this extraordinary history.
The Haitian Revolution did far more than liberate Haiti. The courage, sacrifice, intelligence, and leadership of our ancestors changed the trajectory of the Americas.
Their victory helped collapse Napoleon’s ambitions for a French empire in the Western Hemisphere, contributing to the circumstances that led France to sell the Louisiana Territory to the United States in 1803, nearly doubling the size of the young nation. 🇭🇹🇺🇸
And Haiti continued giving.
President Alexandre Pétion later supported Simón Bolívar with refuge, weapons, supplies, ships, and volunteers for the liberation struggle in Spanish America, with a profound request: that enslaved people be freed in the territories Bolívar liberated.
Imagine the magnitude of that.
A young nation, emerging from the devastation of its own revolution, used its limited resources to help extend freedom to others.
Haiti became living evidence that liberation was possible.
Our history is one of extraordinary courage, brilliance, leadership, generosity, and human dignity.
Thank you, Roger Persaud, for illuminating this history and helping the world recognize Haiti’s profound contribution to the United States, the Americas, and the continuing journey toward freedom.
