What stood out to me most about the Matthew Perry documentary, besides how incredibly lovable he was, was just how powerful addiction really is.
In 2018, his colon ruptured after years of opioid abuse. He spent two weeks in a coma, five months in the hospital, and was placed on life support.
Doctors gave him a 2% chance of surviving.
He survived something that very nearly killed him.
And yet, years later, he died from the acute effects of ketamine.
Let that sink in.
He had money. Fame. People who loved him. Access to treatment.
And he knew firsthand that drugs could kill him.
They almost had.
But even knowing the consequences wasn’t enough to make the addiction disappear.
That’s what I wish more people understood.
Addiction isn’t simply a matter of willpower. Hitting rock bottom doesn’t magically cure it. And nearly dying doesn’t always stop it.
It’s a powerful, deadly disease NOT A CHOICE.
Matthew Perry was incredibly brave and candid about his struggles with addiction. He fought so hard, and by sharing his story, he helped countless others feel less alone in their own battles.
He was a warrior. ❤️
