Hand Therapy Certification Commission

Hand Therapy Certification Commission The Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC) is a not-for-profit corporation which sponsors a voluntary credential in Hand Therapy for OTs and PTs.

A Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) is an occupational therapist or physical therapist who has a minimum of five years of clinical experience, including 4,000 hours or more in direct practice in hand therapy. In addition, the Certified Hand Therapist has successfully passed a comprehensive test of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper quarter rehabilitation. Because of changes in the professio

n, every CHT is required to demonstrate continued professional development and competency by recertifying every five years.

FAQ: Is the “CHT” credential a registered trademark?

We sometimes receive questions about other professionals using the “CHT” credential, such as Certified Hyperbaric Technologists. Here’s what you should know:

Is “CHT” for Certified Hand Therapists a registered trademark?
Yes. The CHT credential for Certified Hand Therapists is a registered trademark of HTCC in the United States and in some foreign countries.

What does that mean?
Trademark registrations apply to specific classes of goods and services. HTCC’s CHT credential is registered specifically in connection with occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Can other professions use “CHT”?
Potentially, yes. Another organization may use “CHT” if it applies to a different profession outside of occupational therapy or physical therapy. However, HTCC’s registration protects the CHT credential from competing, confusing, or misleading uses within occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Why does this matter?
This protection helps maintain the credibility, clarity, and professional distinction of the Certified Hand Therapist credential.
