School-based occupational therapy practitioners are skilled at addressing motor, sensory, and regulatory needs, but are we doing it within occupation, or just alongside it? This session will introduce a three-pillar framework integrating motor learning, systems design, and metacognition through an occupation-based lens. Using goal attainment scaling and self-monitoring strategies, participants will discover how anchoring
intervention at the point of performance transforms skill-building into student ownership — and why occupation-based practice is the missing link we've been looking for to bridge this gap.

FRIDAY KEYNOTE – NOVEMBER 7 4:15 pm-5:15 pm

Gordon Muir Giles, PhD, DipCOT, OTR/L, FAOTA (1.5 PDUs).

This keynote address will describe the personal and professional milestones that led to Dr. Giles’ current focus on functional cognition. Beginning in the UK, working at the first behavior disorder program for traumatic brain injury in the world, to the development of the first non-aversive neurobehavioral programs west of the Mississippi, he has had several professional preoccupations. In this presentation, Dr. Giles will re-examine the questions that preoccupied him throughout his career, such as the role of errorless learning, the development of awareness, and the use of strategy-based interventions in cognitive rehabilitation. Engaging with these questions has led him to believe that the assessment and management of functional cognition present an important opportunity for the occupational therapy profession. Dr. Giles was an AOTA Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Awardee. Also presenting session 73 - Further Development of the Menu Task:
