Most “sleep problems” are actually nervous system problems. Nobody told you that your kid’s brain chemistry doesn’t care about your bedtime routine. You’re not failing. You’re just working against biology without the right information.

Decide if you want to keep fighting the same battles or actually understand what’s happening in your child’s body. This isn’t judgment, it’s clarity. No one teaches parents that most “behavior problems” are actually biology problems. When you work with the body instead of fighting it, everything gets easier.

Comment KIDREST for my Pediatric Sleep Masterclass. I’ll teach you the nervous system approach that actually works.

Savethis before tonight’s bedtime battle.

My uncle passed away on June 29. He made pizzas for a living, and nobody ever called him an essential worker.

David Allen. Everybody called him Cecil. Sixty years old. Little Caesars first, then Donatos Pizza , in Columbus, Ohio. Nights, mostly. He was the guy still standing at the oven after the dining rooms downtown had already gone dark, and the guy with his headlights on somebody's street at 11 at night so a family could eat.

I got down to see him about once a year. This past weekend I drove to Columbus one more time, and this time it was to stand next to his picture.

Here is what I have to sit with now. I am a sleep doctor. I talk about shift workers constantly. Nurses, truckers, cops, firefighters. I never once counted my own uncle, and he worked more nights than most of them.

So how I grieve is by doing something I feel like I'm good at, and that's teaching. So let me say the thing I never said to him.

The most dangerous part of a night shift is not the shift. It is the drive home. Harvard put night shift workers behind the wheel twice, once after a normal night of sleep and once straight off a shift. After sleep, not a single near-crash. Straight off the shift, near-crashes on almost four out of ten drives, with somebody in the passenger seat grabbing the brake.

If that is your life, you are not a weak driver. You are a person whose body was told to be awake at the exact hour it was built to shut down.

"Old Man", I'll miss you 😢 .

To everybody still closing a kitchen tonight, he was one of you, and I see you.

Now here is why I am posting about tennis.

Venus Williams was put on court at 12:15 in the morning on Sunday, the latest start in US Open history, because the match before hers ran four and a half hours. She lost just after 2am. She is 46, so most of the coverage went straight to her age.

I want to say the quiet part. Almost nobody performs well at 2am. Not a 46 year old, not a 26 year old. Your body runs a clock that drops your core temperature, your reaction time and your alertness in the early morning hours, and no amount of preparation talks it out of that. She was not scheduled to fail, but she was scheduled against her own biology.

Here is why this is not really a tennis post. If you are neurodivergent, your clock probably runs late on its own. Melatonin shows up later. Your best hours land at night. Then the world hands you an 8am start and calls you lazy when you cannot produce at your worst hour, five days a week, for years.

That is the same problem Venus had on Sunday. The only difference is that hers made the news.

You are not lazy and you are not broken. You are being measured at the wrong hour. A clock that runs late can be worked with, once you stop fighting it and start building around it.

"I don't know how she does it." She doesn't sleep. That's how.

In our community, "she's so strong" is the highest compliment we give a woman. Hard truth from a sleep medicine doctor: it is also a job with no clock-out, and sleep is the shift nobody covers for her.

If you are the strong one, you already know the routine. Lying in bed with a racing mind, running tomorrow before it starts, wide awake at 2am for no reason you can name. That is not insomnia as a character flaw. That is sleep anxiety, a nervous system trained to stay on watch, because for generations the women who raised us could not afford to stand down. Hypervigilance was a survival skill before it was a sleep problem. You inherited it. You did not choose it.

So no, you are not bad at sleeping. You are excellent at guarding people. Your body just never got told the shift ended.

Strength that never rests is not strength. It is slow damage, to your heart, your mood, your health. And you are allowed to be the strong one and still sleep like someone protects you too.

The 14-Day Sleep Anxiety Reset teaches your nervous system how to stand down at night, step by step. Comment SLEEP PEACE and I'll send it to you right now.

Send this to the woman everybody calls strong. She'll know why.

If part of you lies awake wondering whether the melatonin or the screens are quietly doing damage, that worry alone tells me you’re a parent who’s paying close attention. Most parents I see aren’t being careless, they’re just running on empty and reaching for whatever finally gets everyone some rest. The part worth holding onto is that how and when you use these tools matters far more than whether you use them at all, especially with a kid whose brain stays switched on long after the lights go out. You’re doing better than you think, and a busy little nervous system that needs extra help settling down is something we can work on together.
