Sick Day? You May Not Have to Stop Breastfeeding!

Cold and flu season is here, and if you’re breastfeeding, you might wonder what to do when you get sick.

The good news is that with many common illnesses, you can continue breastfeeding! Your breast milk also contains antibodies and other immune factors that help support your baby. 💜

A few reminders for when you’re under the weather:

• Wash your hands before feeding your baby or pumping.

• Practice good hygiene by covering coughs and sneezes and considering a mask when you’re close to your little one.

• Keep pump parts clean if you’re expressing milk.

• Check before taking cold or flu medicine. Some medications may not be recommended while breastfeeding, and certain decongestants can affect your milk supply.

And mama, remember to take care of yourself, too! If you’re unsure which medications are safe while breastfeeding, check with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Save this post for cold and flu season, and share it with a breastfeeding mama who might need the reminder! 💜

🎀 Breast Health Monday

MYTH: You have to wean before you can get a mammogram.

FACT: You can get a mammogram while breastfeeding!

If you’re due for a screening or something doesn’t feel right, don’t put it off because you’re nursing. A few tips for your appointment:

• Nurse or pump right before your appointment to help reduce fullness and improve image quality.
• Let the imaging team know you’re breastfeeding.
• An ultrasound may also be recommended, depending on your symptoms and medical history. Ultrasound is safe while breastfeeding.

Your health matters too, mom. 💜
Don’t delay getting a breast concern checked because you’re nursing.

🌈 October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and today we’re celebrating our rainbow babies.

A rainbow baby is a baby born after a loss. Just like a rainbow after a storm, they can bring so much light, without ever erasing the storm that came before.

If you’re a rainbow mama, you know that joy and nerves can show up together. You can feel incredibly grateful and still feel scared. You can celebrate this baby while carrying the love and grief of the baby who came before. Both can exist at the same time. 💜

And if you’re pregnant after a loss right now, your feelings are valid. Tell your provider about your loss so they can understand what you’ve been through and help support you throughout this pregnancy. Lean on the people who truly get it, too.

If you know a mama who is expecting, raising, or celebrating a rainbow baby, share this post with her. 🌈 You never know who might need the reminder that her joy and her grief can exist side by side.

Rainbow mamas, show us your rainbow baby.
Drop a photo or a 🌈 in the comments. We want to celebrate with you!

When the temperature drops, it’s so tempting to add a cozy blanket to your baby’s sleep space. But loose blankets, quilts, and other soft bedding aren’t safe for sleep.

So how do you keep baby warm?

✔️ Use a sleep sack or wearable blanket — choose the appropriate TOG rating for the room temperature and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

✔️ Dress baby in layers — generally, baby needs only about one more layer than an adult would comfortably wear in the same environment.

✔️ Keep the sleep space simple — a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet and nothing else.

Skip the loose blankets, pillows, quilts, stuffed animals, hats, and weighted sleep products.

And remember, more layers isn’t always better. Watch for signs of overheating, like sweating, a hot chest, flushed skin, or damp hair.

That cozy blanket might look warm and comfortable, but a properly dressed baby + a safe sleep space is the goal.

A fleece sleep sack over footed pajamas — safe or not safe? 👇

Breast Health Monday 🎀

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and yes, breastfeeding mamas should still be paying attention to their breast health.

We know it can be confusing when your breasts change in size, shape, and texture throughout the day. Breastfeeding can make it harder to know what’s normal for you, which is why getting familiar with how your breasts normally feel can be helpful.

A few simple things to keep in mind:
• Check your breasts regularly, including after nursing or pumping when they may feel softer and emptier.
• Get to know what’s normal for your breasts. Some lumpiness can come and go with feeds.
• Pay attention to changes that are new, persistent, or different from what you normally experience. This can include a lump, skin changes, ni**le changes, or an area that doesn’t seem to be improving.
If something feels different and you’re not sure whether it’s related to breastfeeding, don’t ignore it. Reach out to your healthcare provider and have it checked.

Taking care of your baby is important. Taking care of yourself is too. 💜

Set a monthly reminder on your phone today to check in with your breast health, and comment “done” when you’ve checked!
