Picking at peeling skin or skin lesions significantly impairs the skin’s natural healing process and can lead to avoidable complications. It increases inflammation, disrupts the protective skin barrier, and prolongs wound healing time. Repeated picking also raises the risk of infection and commonly results in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (persistent dark marks) or permanent scarring. Even when hands appear “clean,” mechanical trauma alone is enough to worsen outcomes. For optimal healing, you should avoid picking, support the skin barrier with appropriate hydration, and use targeted treatments as directed by your provider.
