Ivins City Mayor Kevin Smith recently honored the nonprofit organization Southwest Forensic Nursing and Healthcare, which is dedicated to assisting sexual assault survivors.

Believe survivors and don’t expect them to tell you more than they are comfortable.

We don't need to know everything about what a survivor has experienced in order to be there for them and express our support. We shouldn't withhold our support for survivors because they have chosen to keep things private, such as what happened during the assault or who the perpetrator was.

Responding with shame, hostility, or scrutiny only discourages a survivor from speaking out again in the future. By respecting what a survivor chooses to share, we give them back control, which may lead them to share more over time.

And if they don't, that's okay too.

Today is the day. Denim Day began in 1999 after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a r**e conviction, arguing that the survivor “must” have helped remove her tight jeans, implying consent. In protest, people across the world wear denim to stand with survivors and challenge victim-blaming. Wear yours today, Wednesday, 4/29.
