Today is World Alzheimer's Day.
If you're caring for someone with Alzheimer's or dementia, you already know the parts nobody talks about — the repeated questions, the sundowning, the grief that arrives long before the goodbye.
You are doing something enormously hard. And you don't have to do all of it yourself.

When Is It Time to Consider In-Home Care for an Aging Loved One?

It can be difficult for families to know when an aging parent, grandparent, or loved one may need a little extra support at home. Often, the changes happen gradually, making them easy to overlook at first.

Some signs that additional support may be helpful include:

🏠Difficulty keeping up with the home
Unopened mail, accumulating laundry, spoiled food, or a home that is becoming harder to maintain can sometimes indicate that everyday responsibilities are becoming overwhelming.

🍽️Changes in meals or nutrition
Skipping meals, losing interest in cooking, or relying heavily on snacks and convenience foods may be a sign that meal preparation has become more difficult.

🧼Changes in personal care
If bathing, dressing, grooming, or other daily routines are becoming challenging, a caregiver can provide assistance while helping your loved one maintain as much independence as possible.

🧠Increased forgetfulness or confusion
Occasional forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging, but noticeable changes in routines, appointments, medications, or everyday tasks deserve attention.

🤝Increased isolation
For many older adults, companionship is just as important as physical assistance. Regular interaction, conversation, and meaningful activities can make a tremendous difference in quality of life.

One of the biggest misconceptions about in-home care is that families need to wait until their loved one can no longer live independently.

In reality, care can begin with just a little extra help.

At Amada Senior Care of Southern Utah, our goal is to support seniors where they feel most comfortable -at home- while providing families with greater confidence and peace of mind. 💙

Sometimes, accepting a helping hand is exactly what allows someone to remain independent longer.

How Utah's Summer Heat Can Affect Older Adults

Southern Utah summers are known for their beautiful sunshine- but with temperatures often climbing above 100°F, they can also pose serious health risks for older adults.

As we age, our bodies become less efficient at regulating temperature and recognizing thirst. Certain medical conditions and medications can also increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

• Warning Signs to Watch For

Families should be aware of symptoms such as:

-Fatigue or weakness
-Dizziness
-Headaches
-Confusion
-Dry mouth or dark-colored urine
-Nausea

If an older adult becomes confused, loses consciousness, or shows signs of heat stroke, seek emergency medical care immediately.

• Staying Safe This Summer

A few simple steps can make a big difference:

💧 Drink water regularly, even before feeling thirsty.
🏡 Stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.
👕 Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
❄️ Keep living spaces cool with air conditioning or fans.
❤️ Check in on older family members, friends, or neighbors, especially during extreme heat.

Sometimes the simplest act, like making a quick phone call or dropping off a bottle of water, can help keep someone safe.
