If you’re in the market for hearing protection, many of our local hardware stores carry various types of ear plugs and muffs. If you do go to a store, make sure you ask for the NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) of an item. The higher the number, the more noise reduction.

Remember, comfort is key when looking at hearing protection – as well as getting a high number of noise reduction. If you’re hesitant on what to look for, we can help guide you through your options. You can also get custom ear plugs made right here at the Audiology Center of St. Johns – contact us to learn more!

Do you have a job that requires you to operate heavy equipment and loud tools?

You can either head to your local hardware store to pick up a pair of ear plugs or muffs, or you can get a custom pair created at the Audiology Center of St. Johns. Contact us today to learn more!

Does your child have repeated ear infections? Over time, that can cause damage to the inner and can lead to a condition known as Cholesteatoma. Cholesteatoma is an abnormal growth of skin in the middle ear. It can be caused by ongoing pressure problems in the middle ear, frequent ear infections, or by a problem with the eardrum. Over time, the growth can get bigger, damaging the tiny bones of the ear. This can cause hearing loss. Without treatment, Cholesteatoma can continue to grow and cause dizziness, permanent hearing loss, or loss of control over some of the muscles in the face.

Symptoms to watch out for:

Ear pain and/or pressure
Low fever
Hearing loss
Non-waxy ear drainage
Pulling or tugging at the ear
Dizziness or imbalance

If If you find that your child's repeatedly ear infections may be causing damage, contact your primary care doctor or child’s pediatrician for a referral to Audiology Center of St. Johns.

The signs of hearing loss aren’t always obvious, especially in children. Here are some of the things to look out for:
Your child does not follow simple commands, such as “time for dinner,” or understand simple directions
Is easily frustrated or experiences communication breakdowns
Is falling behind with speech and communication skills
Cannot understand what you are saying unless they are looking directly at you
Cannot identify where sounds are coming from
Is exhausted at the end of school from concentrating to understand speech
Shows signs of behavioral problems or social difficulties
Experiences problems keeping up at school or grades slipping

If you feel your child may be encountering hearing issues, talk with your primary care doctor, or pediatrician about your concerns. If necessary, they can give you a referral to an audiologist, like the trusted team at Audiology Center of St. Johns.

Cold and flu season will soon be upon us, which means sneezing and sniffles that can lead to ear infections. Kids tend to get more ear infections than adults because their Eustachian tubes (canals that connect the ear space to the nasal cavity) are narrower, shorter, and more horizontal than those of adults. That makes it easier for fluid to get trapped behind the eardrum and become infected. Usually this clears with a course of antibiotics.

Middle ear infections can affect your child's hearing and this can be unsettling, but it's usually temporary which does not result in any permanent hearing loss. Repeated infections though can create larger problems that will need to be evaluated by a professional.

If you find that your child is repeatedly fighting ear infections, which do not improve with antibiotics and may be contributing to further issues, contact your primary care doctor or child’s pediatrician for a referral to Audiology Center of St. Johns.

Untreated hearing loss causes delays in the development of speech and language, and those delays then lead to learning problems, often resulting in poor performance in the classroom. If your child cannot properly hear the teacher, they will not be able to complete their work and can fall behind academically as well as socially.

Signs parents and teachers can watch for in the classroom include:

Inattentiveness
Inappropriate responses to questions
Daydreaming
Trouble following directions
Speech problems

When hearing loss is identified early and managed appropriately, the child can become an effective communicator. This process involves parents and professionals working together.

If you feel that your child's difficulties in school may be related to hearing, contact your primary care doctor or child's pediatrician today and discuss a referral to Audiology Center of St. Johns.

What is Meniere's disease?

Meniere's disease is a disorder that affects the inner part of the ear – usually only in one ear. It’s known to cause vertigo, hearing problems, and a loud ringing in the ear. This ringing is usually what brings someone in suspecting tinnitus.

Both ear infections and Meniere's disease can lead to severe tinnitus – in some cases, causing a growth on the auditory nerve. We call this an Acoustic Neuroma. If you’re experiencing symptoms of tinnitus in one ear only, get yourself checked as soon as possible. Your audiologist will be able to determine if an underlying medical condition is responsible for your symptoms.

Who is most likely to get tinnitus?

Individuals who regularly experience loud noise exposure are the most likely to end up with tinnitus. Though typically tinnitus doesn’t occur without an underlying cause or condition, it can occur simply due to excessive noise – even in the absence of hearing loss.

We see many individuals who served in the military or have jobs that are particularly noisy get treated for tinnitus. In these cases, the best way to prevent tinnitus is with hearing protection and simply avoiding really loud situations. Additionally, we see tinnitus in men more than we do women. This is likely due to the nature of the jobs that bring these individuals in to get their hearing tested.

If you find yourself experiencing tinnitus symptoms, no need to worry! Contact us to learn more about testing and available treatment options.
