HERO is a free, virtual mentoring program for Vermont high school students interested in exploring health careers and learning alongside a The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont student mentor.

Here are a few important upcoming dates:
September 10 at 3:30 p.m. - Optional virtual About HERO Q&A
September 18 - Applications close
October 6 at 6:30 p.m. - Virtual orientation for selected students
October 12–December 6 - HERO mentoring sessions

HERO is open to students in grades 9–12 living in Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orleans, Orange and Washington counties.

A great look at the mentorship that helps bring Vermont’s health career pipeline to life.

Each summer, Larner College of Medicine students help high school students explore what a future in health care could look like through Vermont AHEC programs - including the Governor's Institutes of VT’s Health & Medicine Institute and MedQuest.

From hands-on clinical skills and career exploration to guidance from medical students who were once navigating their own next steps, these experiences help Vermont students see the many paths into health care - and themselves in those careers.

We’re grateful to our partners at the The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont and across the Vermont AHEC Network for helping inspire Vermont’s future health workforce.

Applications are now open for the 2026 HERO Mentoring Program! This free, virtual program pairs Vermont high school students with medical students from The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont

HERO is open to students in:
Caledonia, Chittenden, Essex, Franklin, Grand Isle, Lamoille, Orange, Orleans, and Washington counties.

Through one-to-one mentoring, students explore health science, healthcare careers, and the many pathways into the field. No previous healthcare experience or advanced science knowledge is needed - just curiosity and a willingness to explore.

Meet Rising Star CSHIP Intern Ryder Busto!

From Burke, Vermont, Ryder is spending his summer giving back through his CSHIP internship with .O.P.E. Vermont (Helping Other People Every Day) in Lyndonville.

As a rising sophomore and nursing major at the University of Vermont, Ryder is leading H.O.P.E.'s Summer Produce Giveaway Program, connecting with local farms to provide fresh, healthy food to neighbors experiencing food insecurity while expanding the program's reach throughout the community.

"Working with H.O.P.E. has helped me communicate more effectively with diverse populations experiencing issues like housing and food insecurity. I have met so many people I might never have known, and it has meant so much to me listening to their challenges and offering support," Ryder shared.

His supervisor, Jaime Brown, has seen that impact firsthand:
"Ryder has been so dedicated to his internship responsibilities at H.O.P.E. Through his calm demeanor and attention to detail, he has been successful in expanding the outreach for the Summer Produce Giveaway Program."

Ryder hopes to pursue a career in nursing, with a focus on emergency services—and if this summer is any indication, he's already building the compassion, leadership, and commitment that will make him an outstanding healthcare professional.

Congratulations, Ryder! We're excited to see where your journey leads and grateful for the positive impact you're making today. 👏

What does the future of Vermont’s healthcare workforce look like? Today, it looked like 140 curious high school students suturing wounds, practicing vital signs, testing their skills on a laparoscopic surgical simulator, exploring medical injections, experimenting with protective pill coatings, challenging their memories, and navigating the world through distortion goggles.
As part of the Governor’s Institute of Vermont Health & Medicine Institute, students spent part of their day at the College & Career Expo, connecting with 20 exhibitors representing health education, careers, programs, and pathways across Vermont.
This was no ordinary tabling event. Students were able to ask questions, meet professionals, try real skills, and discover possibilities they may not have known existed. Experiences like these help turn curiosity into confidence - and allow young Vermonters to begin seeing themselves as part of our state’s future healthcare workforce.

A huge thank-you to every exhibitor who brought their expertise, energy, equipment, and creativity to today’s Expo. You helped bring healthcare careers to life!

The Governor's Institutes of VT Health & Medicine Institute is officially in full swing - and students are diving right in!

Over the past few days, students have jumped into the hands-on learning with sessions covering areas such as general medicine, neuroscience and psychology, and biomedical research & development. From heart dissections and brain dissections to building a prototype leg, they are not just learning about health and medicine - they are experiencing it.

These sessions are giving Vermont high school students a closer look at anatomy, innovation, and the many pathways that can lead to careers in healthcare, research, and beyond. We love seeing their curiosity, focus, and excitement come to life.

And this is only the beginning of the week!

This summer, the Vermont Area Health Education Center Network’s College Student Health Internship Program is buzzing with energy and purpose. Nineteen talented college students from across the country have rolled
