Not every tick bite requires antibiotics—but in some situations, a single dose of doxycycline may help prevent Lyme disease.
Contact your healthcare provider if:
✔️ The tick was removed within the last 72 hours
✔️ The tick was attached and engorged (filled with blood)
✔️ The tick was a deer tick (blacklegged tick), or you're not sure what type it was
The sooner you reach out, the better. Preventive treatment is most effective when started within 72 hours of tick removal.
Remember:
• You do not need to bring the tick in for testing to determine whether preventive treatment is appropriate.
• Monitor for symptoms such as a rash, fever, fatigue, headache, or muscle and joint aches.
• Seek medical care if symptoms develop, even if you received preventive treatment.
Lyme disease is common, but knowing when to seek care can help reduce your risk and keep you healthy all season long.
