Many businesses allow customers to pay with credit and debit cards, payment apps, and other electronic payment methods. Payment processors and platforms often deduct their fees before transferring funds, but you generally shouldn’t report the net amount as revenue. Instead, record the full amount of each sale as revenue and post the processing fee as an operating expense. Keeping these amounts separate shows how much you’re spending to accept electronic payments and whether rising processing costs are eating into your profits. Contact us at (269) 926-2191 for help reconciling processor statements with your accounting records and evaluating your payment mix.

Severe weather and other threats to a business’s ability to operate can occur at any time. Although you can’t foresee every disaster, you can put together a comprehensive business continuity plan that addresses most potential threats. If you don’t have a plan in place, implement basic protections immediately, such as an evacuation strategy and insurance. But, from there, take your time to get it right. Call us at (269) 926-2191 for help identifying and managing the costs associated with a business continuity plan.

If you’re sending money abroad, beware of a possible 1% excise tax. This new tax generally applies to transfers of cash, money orders or cashier’s checks from U.S. senders to foreign recipients via certain remittance transfer providers such as Western Union and MoneyGram. But transfers made via credit or debit card, bank account transfer, or digital wallet aren’t subject to the excise tax. Essentially, the tax doesn’t apply to transfers from accounts in financial institutions subject to Bank Secrecy Act requirements or to credit or debit cards issued in the U.S. So to avoid the extra expense, consider using a card or ACH transfer from your own bank account. How much should you budget for retirement expenses? One common guideline says 60% to 70% of your current income. Some expenses might decrease or disappear (commuting costs, mortgage payments), while others are likely to increase (health care, property taxes). Specificity, not to mention incorporating inflation into your calculation, is important. We can help — call us at (269) 926-2191.

If you’re thinking about financing a new vehicle, you may be able to deduct up to $10,000 per year of interest paid. The deduction is available for certain personal auto loans originated after Dec. 31, 2024 — even if you don’t itemize deductions. Modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) limits apply, and only qualifying vehicles assembled in the U.S. are eligible. Before purchasing, consider whether eligibility for the deduction should factor into your vehicle choice. We can help run the numbers. Call us at (269) 926-2191.

Business owners: Are you or your employees planning to go “back to school” soon? Two types of work-related education costs may qualify for business tax breaks: 1) those required to retain an existing job, license or professional status, and 2) those directly tied to maintaining or improving skills for a current trade or business. Deductible expenses can include tuition, books, supplies and possibly travel if the primary purpose of the trip is business-related education. However, you can’t deduct costs for education that help meet the minimum qualifications for a position or to qualify for a new trade or business. Contact us at (269) 926-2191 to learn the ABCs of work-related education expense deductions.
