September is Newborn Screening Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating the simple test that saves thousands of lives every single year.

It’s a heel prick that checks for more than 30 serious but treatable health conditions. This screening gives babies the best chance at a healthy start by catching issues before symptoms even appear.

September is Whole Grain Month🌾🍞 Whole grains are packed with nutrients that fuel your family's growth! Unlike refined grains, whole grains keep the entire grain kernel—giving you more fiber, B vitamins, and minerals to keep you feeling full and energized.

Your WIC benefits cover whole grains like whole-wheat bread, brown rice, oats, corn tortillas, whole-grain pasta, and more! Talk to your WIC dietitian for more information and for easy ways to include whole grains in your family’s diet.

The health benefits of breastfeeding are well-researched for baby and parent! 🤱
Data from the USDA show that breastfeeding support efforts helped increase the number of WIC families who chose to start breastfeeding to 70% in 2022. While there’s still work to do, let’s celebrate the wins and strive for even stronger breastfeeding support this and beyond! 💖
WIC is here to support your family from the moment you know you’re pregnant, up to your child’s fifth birthday! Read more: https://www.cbpp.org/blog/growing-share-of-infants-participating-in-wic-are-breastfed

What an exciting milestone for our community! 🩷 Mosaic’s new Milk Depot gives local families a convenient way to donate extra breast milk, helping provide pasteurized donor milk to babies who need it most.

Congratulations to Mosaic and Mikalah on the very first donation—an incredible 135 ounces! We are grateful to have community partners working to support breastfeeding families and improve the health of mothers and babies throughout our area. 🥛✨

Our very first Milk Depot donation! 🥹🩷

There couldn’t be a more fitting person to help us mark this milestone.

Mikalah is a former member of our team, having worked as a scrub tech here before beginning medical school at UMKC. She plans to become an OB/GYN and hopes to further specialize in Breastfeeding Medicine—so seeing her return to New Beginnings, this time as a milk donor, feels incredibly full circle.

Mikalah donated 135 ounces of breast milk to our new Milk Depot. Every ounce will be sent to The Milk Bank, where donated milk is carefully screened, pasteurized, and prepared to help provide human milk to babies who need it.

This is exactly what we hoped our Milk Depot would become: a way for families in our community to turn their extra milk into something extraordinary for another family. One mother helping another mother. One baby helping another baby. 💕

Mikalah, thank you for trusting us with your donation—and for being the very first name on our donor board! We are so excited to watch where your journey in medicine takes you. Something tells us this won’t be the last time you make a difference for moms and babies. 🩷

135 ounces donated. Countless drops of love. And our Milk Depot is officially underway! 🥛✨

Breastfeeding rates in the Black community remain lower compared to other communities, highlighting the need for increased awareness, support, and education. 💖

Join us in celebrating the 15th annual Black Breastfeeding Week! 🤱🏿 This year's theme, "We All We Got,” uplifts the importance of breastfeeding while honoring Black families, culture, and community by centering collective power and togetherness.
