I love to hear stories of hauntings, because I've had experiences of my own growing up. And not like the "psychic" stories I tell from childhood but of living in very real haunted spaces.
The first one was a house in old Boonesboro, Maryland. It was one of the oldest houses in the area, it was on corner of a street (I haven't been able to locate the address, sorry). It was a two story residence that someone rented out to my family back in the last 1970s. It was noisy even when no one was home. Footsteps could be heard from upstairs. Strange crashing sounds when only one person was in the house.
My bedroom was haunted, of course - first floor room that originally a parlor. I'm sure it was used for the dead who were lying in repose. It never bothered me, I frequently saw a woman going through (especially in dreams) placing flowers in it, dusting, straightening it up, and making sure things were in top order for guests.
The second haunted house I lived in had more known history to it. It was Gwynn Park manor, which was situated in a to***co field off of Dyson Road, right behind the current Gwynn Park high school.
THAT house had a lot activity - constant walk could be heard from the upstairs floors, an occasional sighting of a spirit walk up or down the main stairway, and my cats... poor babies... would be driven to insanity by something that I couldn't see but that they could see.
The woman of the house was always there. I remember when my father first opened the front door and the main stairway was right in front of us. A woman in what looked like Victorian or earler dress was coming down the steps and noticed me. I sad, "Dad, that lady wants to know why we're here." Dad couldn't see her, and started looking around the house. I looked at the lady and shrugged and thought, "Maybe he'll explain it to you later."
The point of sharing this is that we all have our stories of hauntings, whether we like them or not, whether we've rationalized our way out of believing them or not.
It's part of what humans are.
So as I share this, I'm askng you to think about your story, your willingness to share it, sharing it, and making connections to others to learn how similar we all really are.
There's going to be an open discussion about this tonight at WhataBoba Lusby -the event is free. Bring your stories, and just show up - we'd love to see you there.
And I'll be there to help you get a new perspective on hauntings - what they are, and why they are for the most past NOT BAD.
