My daughter said a prayer the night before her 8th birthday.

She said, “God, please bring Chloe home, and if Chloe can’t come home, will you please send another cat?”

The next day, Zoe showed up.

Yesterday, 16 years later, we had to say goodbye to her.

Before Zoe, my daughter had a young cat named Chloe. She was an indoor cat, but every once in a while she would manage to slip out the door under our feet and go chase butterflies in the backyard.

One evening, Chloe slipped outside and never came home.

We searched everywhere for her, but we never found her.

A couple of months later came that prayer.

The following afternoon, we came home and heard something in the garage. There was a little cat sitting on the step.

She looked so much like Chloe that for a moment we thought she had come home. But this little cat was much smaller.

My daughter took one look at her and said, “That’s my cat. I prayed. God sent me a cat.”

And that was Zoe.

For the next 16 years, she was my daughter’s cat.

Yesterday, I checked in with Zoe because something wasn’t right. Her eyes were still bright, but her breathing had changed and she had developed a wheeze.

When I connected with her, what I felt was pressure in her chest and lungs. Her lungs felt full, with only a small amount of space at the top for her to breathe. Her breaths felt shallow, like she simply couldn’t get enough air.

We took her to the veterinarian expecting that maybe we were dealing with an allergy, an infection, or something else that could be treated.

Instead, we learned that her lungs were filled with fluid.

It was much more serious than we had expected, and her breathing was too compromised for us to bring her home.

So yesterday, we let Zoe go.

But Zoe has been more than my daughter’s cat for all these years.

Her story became a lesson we have returned to again and again throughout my daughter’s life.

Whenever life felt uncertain, whenever she couldn’t see how something was going to work out, whenever she needed a reminder that she wasn’t walking through this life by herself, sometimes all I had to say was:

Remember Zoe.

Remember what happened when you were eight years old.

You asked.
You trusted.
And something showed up that you never could have planned.

Maybe that’s what Zoe’s story has always represented for us.

Not that we’re promised everything we ask for. Not that life will always unfold the way we want it to.

But that we are supported in ways we don’t always understand.

That we aren’t as alone as we sometimes feel.

That there is something greater than ourselves, whatever name we give it, and sometimes we have to stop trying to figure everything out long enough to trust that we are being heard.

Sometimes the answer looks like a little cat sitting on a step.

And sometimes that answer stays for 16 years.

As I was sitting on my porch this morning telling Zoe’s story, a hummingbird flew up and hovered right in front of my face.

We don’t usually see hummingbirds around our house. Seeing one is a rare treat.

And of all mornings, there one was.

I couldn’t help but smile.

Remember Zoe.❤️🐾

I was getting ready for an energy work session this morning, and Sage was ready too. ❤️

My animals always seem to know when the energy shifts. They’re happy to participate, lend a little support, and, I suspect, soak up some of that good energy for themselves. 😂

They just always want to be included.

Best coworkers I could ask for. ❤️🐾

Pay attention to the difference between being appreciated for who you are and being appreciated for what you’re willing to do. It should go both ways. 👏You can care deeply, show up for people, and still have boundaries around your time and energy.

A little reminder to make room for the things that light you up. Life isn’t only about what needs to get done. Make sure you’re enjoying some of it, too.

There are things we talk ourselves out of simply because we’re afraid of how they’ll look to someone else. But they’re not living your life. You are. Give yourself permission.

My dear friend Ruth shared something this morning that stopped me for a minute.

It was a post about a woman who, years ago, sat down and made lists of everything she wanted to do, experience, have, and create in her life.

Looking back now, she realized that nearly all of it had happened, although not necessarily in the ways she expected.

Then Ruth added another perspective. There comes a point in life when we may not have the same health, energy, or freedom to make those big changes.

Those two things together got me.

So, it’s going to be 90-some degrees today, I’m definitely staying out of the heat, and I’m making some new lists.

It’s something I’ve done throughout my life, but I haven’t done it in a while.

And this isn’t a to-do list.

It’s a what do I still want for my life? list.

What do I want to experience? What sounds fun? What do I want to create? Where do I want to go? What would I try if I stopped worrying about whether it made sense? What would I do if I stopped worrying about what anyone else thought?

I’m actually in the middle of some pretty big changes in my own life right now. I’m creating in new ways, my energy work is evolving, and I’m finding a new way to bring my photography and these Appalachian artifacts together.

And part of getting here has been letting go of worrying so much about what other people might think about what I’m doing. That’s a big one. Because when you stop needing everyone else to understand your choices, you give yourself a whole lot more room to make them.

I’m doing this thing. I’m excited about it. And there’s something pretty beautiful about that.

So I’m really curious to see what ends up on my list today.

Maybe it’s time to dream a little bigger again.

What would be on yours?

I can't even believe this. I’m sharing this because integrity in this work is all we have.

I’ve spent more than 45 years living with and understanding my intuitive abilities, and 27 years intentionally studying, training, and developing the skills I bring to this work.

When I sit down to work with someone, I am doing the work. I am tuning into that individual, their energy, their frequency, and their unique divine blueprint. What I share with them comes from that work.

When someone trusts me enough to come to me for answers, understanding, healing, or simply some relief, I take that trust seriously.

For me, there can be no shortcut around that.

Integrity matters. And the person on the other side of this work deserves my time, my full attention, my training, my experience, and every bit of the ability I have to offer them. They deserve to know that when they come to me, the work they receive is mine.

AI can imitate the language. It can never duplicate the connection, the experience, or the work itself. And that genuine, personal work is exactly what my clients deserve and expect from me.

When I say this work has been part of my life since I was a child, I mean it quite literally.

I was six years old when I had one of my earliest experiences of trying to connect with someone from a distance. I didn’t know anything about energy work or intuition. I didn’t have words for what I was doing.

I just knew what made sense to me.

Today on Healing Notes, I’m sharing that story.

Before I Had Words for It ❤️

A childhood memory of intuition, connection, and energy work long before I had words to explain it. Becky Nichols shares one of her earliest experiences of connecting with someone from a distance.

You get one life that is yours. Make room for the things that excite you, the dreams you keep putting off, and the parts of yourself you still want to discover. You’re allowed to create, change, grow, and choose a life that feels like you. Actually, that’s the whole point.
