For Maurice Payne, surgical technologist at Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital, 40 years in one department comes down to something simple: the people.

After serving in the Air Force and spending a short time at Saint Anthony Hospital, Maurice joined the urology team at what was then Suburban Hospital, now Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital. He has been there ever since.

Over four decades, Maurice has built lasting relationships with the physicians and co-workers around him, and those connections are a big part of why he has continued to call the urology team home.

Thank you, Maurice, for 40 years of dedication to our patients, colleagues and team.

Some nurses leave an impact that lasts a lifetime. For one family, Molly provided comfort, strength and compassion during the unimaginable loss of their daughter. In nominating Molly for a DAISY Award, the family shared that she never left their side and ensured both mother and baby were treated with extraordinary care, dignity and love.

From offering comfort through grief to creating cherished memories the family will treasure forever, Molly's compassion made a lasting difference during their darkest moments. From 32 weeks to thriving at 13 months! 💜
Stormie spent 29 days in the neonatal intensive care unit at Norton Children’s Hospital after being born premature. Once she learned to feed on her own, she finally got to go home and begin her next chapter.
Today, Stormie is happy, healthy and meeting her milestones. ✨

With respiratory therapists in short supply nationwide, Norton Children's is finding new ways to prepare the next generation. Through its apprenticeship program, students get hands-on experience while still in school and learn what it takes to provide specialized care for kids. Of the 28 students who have completed the program, 19 have joined Norton Children’s as full-time respiratory therapists, helping ensure kids have access to the care they need.

From nearly two months in the NICU to starting school, look at Brantley now! 💙

Born at 36 weeks and 4 days after complications from severe preeclampsia, Brantley spent almost two months in the neonatal intensive care unit and went home with a feeding tube.
Since then, he’s been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called 22q duplication syndrome, faced surgeries and has had plenty of challenges. But today, he’s talking and thriving!

This NICU Awareness Month, we’re celebrating Brantley and all the little fighters who show us just how far they can go. 💙

Five years ago today, Vaidehi Patel got a new kidney and a new chapter in life.

Watch her walk our halls at the Novak Center for Children’s Health to cheers and streamers from the care team who's been by her side every step of the way. Vaidehi greets everyone with a smile and never forgets to ask how they’re doing – that's just who she is.

Her dad put it best: "Norton Children's transplant team has done a remarkable job... from pre- to post-transplant, it's truly been a team effort."

We're honored to be part of Vaidehi's story. She's already traded tennis courts for hiking trails – here’s to many more years of adventures!

After a frightening experience that brought their newborn daughter to the emergency department, her parents knew they had to recognize Joshua Shouse for the care he provided. Throughout a full sepsis workup and an unexpected hospital stay, Josh took the time to explain every step, answer questions, and even lighten the mood with conversations that helped exhausted parents navigate the uncertainty.

When the baby returned to the emergency department just hours after discharge, Josh recognized her name on the board and immediately stepped back in to care for her. That simple act reminded her family that their daughter wasn't just another patient. She was known, remembered, and genuinely cared for. Josh's compassion, attentiveness, and dedication brought comfort during a stressful time and left a lasting impact on a family that will never forget him. In recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Norton Children’s welcomed Kentucky Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman, patients, families and community advocates to Norton Children’s Cancer Institute Resource Center. The gathering highlighted the ongoing need for comprehensive pediatric cancer care and support for children and families, as well as how community support is helping those affected by pediatric cancer across Kentucky.

Norton Children’s Cancer Institute Resource Center, located in the Novak Center for Children’s Health in downtown Louisville, was made possible through a $2.1 million investment led by the Norton Children’s Hospital Foundation and funded by community donors. That includes more than $1.4 million in state grants from the Kentucky Pediatric Cancer Research Trust Fund, as the commonwealth has become a national leader in the fight against childhood cancer.

Since opening in January, the resource center has served nearly 500 patients and family members from 130 ZIP codes across Kentucky and the region, through more than 1,400 interactions. The center connects families with resources and services designed to help address the many challenges that come with a childhood cancer diagnosis. It offers a wide range of support services in one location, including financial navigators, nurse navigators, educational liaisons, mental health specialists and expressive arts therapists.

Making a difference often happens in the moments no one expects. 💙

BEE Award winner Courtney Sink, Radiology, demonstrated exceptional compassion when caring for a patient before transport to ultrasound. Noticing the patient's needs, Courtney took the initiative to change bedding and clothing, gather necessary comfort supplies, and ensure the patient felt cared for and supported throughout the experience.

Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital is now offering Ion robotic bronchoscopy, advanced technology that helps physicians reach and biopsy hard-to-access lung nodules with greater precision. The goal: detect lung cancer earlier and help patients get the treatment they need sooner.
