June is Aphasia Awareness Month 💜

Aphasia is one of the most common and least known communication disorders in the world. Over 15 million people globally live with it, including 2 million in the US. Yet nearly 85% of Americans have never heard the term.

ANCDS is committed to changing that, one conversation at a time. Help us spread awareness this month.

Happy Pride Month from ANCDS! 🌈

This June, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ members, clinicians, researchers, students, and the individuals and families we all serve. Inclusive care means recognizing and honoring the whole person — and that commitment lives at the heart of what we do.

Every voice deserves to be heard. Every person deserves high-quality, affirming care.

Highlighting ANCDS member research! ✨

Can pairing high-definition brain stimulation (HD-tACS) with speech entrainment therapy help people with chronic nonfluent aphasia speak more fluently after a stroke?

In a double-blind study, 13 participants received HD-tACS in three conditions (in-phase, anti-phase, and sham) while practicing speech with a model. Researchers tracked word count, errors, and how closely participants matched the example speech.

In-phase HD-tACS led to significantly more words produced and better speech matching compared to the sham condition.

These results offer promising evidence that combining advanced brain stimulation with traditional speech therapy could boost language recovery for stroke survivors with aphasia.

Exciting news! ✨ ANCDS members just published a pilot study focusing on youth and young adults experiencing homelessness (YYEH) and how acquired brain injury (ABI) affects their executive functioning (EF).

📋 In this study, 23 YYEH (ages 18–25) from Central Ohio were screened for ABI using the OSU TBI-ID+ABI tool and completed cognitive assessments with the BRIEF-A and NIH Toolbox.

🧠 Results showed that 87% of participants had a lifetime history of ABI. While overall executive function wasn’t elevated, those with multiple ABIs reported significantly more challenges with self-monitoring, shifting between tasks, and overall executive functioning compared to those with only one ABI.

💡 These findings underscore the need for service providers to consider the unique cognitive profiles of youth experiencing homelessness when planning support and interventions.
