Can alternate nostril breathing help you beat anxiety, improve digestion, and sleep soundly? 👃 ⠀

In his book, Breath, describes how "the right nostril is a gas pedal... circulation speeds up, your body gets hotter, and cortisol levels, blood pressure, and heart rate all increase".⠀

Conversely, "Inhaling through the left nostril has the opposite effect... The left nostril is more deeply connected to the parasympathetic nervous system, the rest-and-relax side that lowers temperature and blood pressure, cools the body, and reduces anxiety."⠀

LEFT = Rest-and-Digest 😴 ⠀
RIGHT = Alertness & Focus💡 ⠀

Alternate nostril breathing is a huge part of many ancient Pranayama yoga practices, and for good reason!⠀

By changing which nostril you breathe out of, you can alter your own physiology to either boost energy and focus or chill out.⠀

While many practices involve switching between nostrils, some research shows that breathing out of a single nostril for prolonged periods of time has more pronounced effects.⠀

🏖️ FOR STRESS, ANXIETY, SLEEP, AND DIGESTION⠀

Cover the right nostril lightly with your thumb or finger. Inhale and exhale through the left nostril for 3-5 minutes.⠀

⚡️ FOR ENERGY, ALERTNESS, AND FOCUS⠀

Cover the left nostril lightly with the thumb or finger. Inhale and exhale through the right nostril for 3-5 minutes.⠀

Try it out and let me know what you think. FOLLOW for more breathing science and animations!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

If I had to pick one buzzword I'm sick of hearing over the last year, it's MINDFULNESS.

It's not because I don't love mindfulness, or practice mindfulness meditation myself, but because it's VASTLY overused and often used in the wrong context.

Most people, even some "mindfulness" coaches, couldn't provide a solid explanation or definition of WHAT mindfulness is, which is why in today's post, we're going to be previewing an upcoming blog post and video coming to the One Deep Breath App - The Art and Science of Mindfulness.

What do YOU do to become more mindful? Let us know in the comments below!

NEW to the One Deep Breath App: Resonant Coherent Breathing for HRV, Stress, Anxiety, and more!

HOW you breathe (speed, depth, inhalation/exhalation ratio) has a significant impact on our ability to control our state of well-being.

Respiration rate is EXCEPTIONALLY important.

This is because breathing can be considered as an oscillator that drives the heart rate and many other internal body rhythms (e.g. arterial blood pressure).

Scientists have discovered that the heart rate and breathing synchronize, or become resonance, at a frequency of about 0.1 Hz.

While the EXACT speed/rate varies from person-to-person, most research shows that the optimal rate is roughly 6 breaths per minute, with equal-length inhales and exhales.

breaths/min). Such harmonization is so beneficial to the health of our body because it allows biological mechanisms to work most efficiently and smoothly.

Ice Man Breathing is back!

This is a One Deep Breath fan favorite, and has the science to back it up. Studies show that it helps bolster the immune system, increase stress tolerance, and help you warm up before exercise.

Always remember to breathe safe and refrain from performing this technique near water or while operating a vehicle.

You can customize this exercise and more on the One Deep Breath app, link in our bio!
