In a serendipitous continuity of our letter-writing workshop on Ambedkar Jayanti, and honoring Dalit History Month, we at Ananya Dance Theatre are so delighted to collaborate with FD13 and host the fabulous artist Rajyashri Goody at Shawngrām Institute for Performance & Social Justice. Rajyashri is sharing a rehearsal for public “No good can come from over-modesty.” Monday 4/22, 6-7pm. Please join us!
For this newly commissioned work-in-progress, Goody honors, translates, and invites engagement with a specific text by the 17th century bhakti poet-saint Tukaram, quoted by Dalit leader, Dr. Ambedkar (1891-1956) in his newspaper Mooknayak, which states: काय करु आता धरुनिया भीड | नि:शंक हे तोंड वाजविले || नव्हे जगी कोणी मुकियांचा जाण | सार्थक लाजून नव्हे हित || Why should I feel shy? I have laid aside hesitation and opened my mouth. Here, on earth, no notice is taken of a voiceless creature. No real good can be secured by over-modesty.
