The Wildflower Project

The Wildflower Project The Wildflower Project is a mission-based service dedicated to creating pollinator habitat. To bring vibrant, natural beauty to our urban communities.

At TWP, we promise to:

To revitalize and restore the health & wellness of pollinator habitats. To foster education and community development through volunteerism and partnerships. To take spaces with no hope, and give them a purpose.

It’s been a while since we have updated anyone on our status. The Wildflower Project is now a stewardship wing of our parent company

This means we haven’t stopped finding unloved urban spaces and turning them into beacons of beauty within the city. This Guerrilla garden was installed near downtown Brainerd across from the historic water tower. I drove past the raised planter several times during our first few summers here and it was always loaded with invasive w**ds.

You know how we roll, see a problem-FIX IT! We headed there in spring of 2025 and cleared out 10” of awful soil and topped the planter with our premium compost. Sprinkle some of our magic urban pollinator seed mix and let nature take the wheel!

In just one season this has already become a spark of joy along one of the busiest and most urban areas of Brainerd. Check it out this summer, you won’t be able to miss it on highway 210!

We aren’t just tossing native plants into the ground, these are designed plant communities. Each one is customized to the site conditions and location. Here you can see how we choose plants that bloom together for even greater effect. Purple prairie clover/yarrow/butterfly w**d is a top 5 plant combination for the boulevard. Mix it with some ornamental onion, prairie smoke, prairie drop and blue grama. It’s a feast for the bugs AND the eyes 😍

WOW! We’ve tried establishing wild lupine in several gardens but it has always struggled. I guess all it needed was a very attentive garden momma (you know who you are! 😉). Just look at how beautiful and natural that color is? A genuinely special plant that should be appreciated by everyone.

Some folks are calling it a “butterfly gateway” some are saying “pollinator paradise” but the general consensus is, our boulevard garden kicks ass! If you are walking down Raymond Ave, keep your head on a swivel because a monarch might knock you over, for real!

June grass dazzles pedestrians with its stunning sea foam flowers. We love to mix it with prairie smoke and plant it along the sidewalk border. Stay alert the next couple days while we highlight our garden installation completed in 2019 at ☺️

What if gardens could slow down traffic? The American Psychological Association says that when streets are lined with gardens, average speed and number of accidents both decreased. Slowing down is important, soaking in life is important. We loved seeing all the traffic around our garden this weekend, lots of happy people.
Our mission to transform urban habitat has the potential change how our cities are LIVED in. Feeling more present and more connected. Having the chance to be educated on native plants and pollinators around every street corner. Enjoying a bike ride along your favorite gardened street during sunset. These are active ways to appreciate your environment.
What about mental health? The garden has always been a cure for stress and depression. The innocent perfection of a flower can put life into perspective. The dance of a butterfly can pick up your mood. I’ve had days where the stress of life is weighing on me but then I see two butterflies dance over my head and even with shoulders slumped, I can’t help but smile. It takes a lot of small moments and big moments to guide our mental health. We like to think our gardens help with the small moments.
If you are looking for a way to improve your life, your community and your health, please reach out to us. Let’s make 2021 a better year!

Captured some late season wildflowers up at the lake this weekend! Rough Blazingstar continues to rise up my “must plant” list with its late season toughness. Swamp Milkw**d always dazzles in fall, a vastly underrated fall foliage perennial. The Mountain Maples win another “best in show” award for their unbelievable color and variance. What are your favorite fall plants??

When summer fades and soil dries, one plant stands above them all. Goldenrod seems to find a way to thrive and feed pollinators no matter the conditions. With turning the parking lot into a patio, it’s a perfect time to soak in the golden hues (and the golden beer?!).
The last photo is a remnant cosmo from our very first attempt to establish wildflowers. They keep popping up every year!

It has always been an absolute honor to work with the amazing humans from . They provided us with the opportunity of a lifetime. Believing in us and our mission based on merit alone was a risk, they were never shook. I come to this place 3 years later and toughness. From both the humans and the plants.
We think about Jill, Deb and everyone else involved with . We think about all of the restaurants and business owners who have struggled to survive. We also think about the earth, what it still needs and how we can continue our mission to create pollinator habitat. Look at the toughness of our people, the endurance of our earth and the resilience in our minds. We can do anything, we are capable of coming together to create harmony. We are strong.
The garden you see was built with sweat equity. Built with love and morality. Driven by the desire to take things into our own hands. To push new ideas about urban habitats. This garden, three years later, has become a tough, enduring and resilient force. It stands as the imperfectly perfect garden of our dreams. A symbol of effort, of resourcefulness, of imagination.
Is there a “garden” in your life? Something you have always wanted to do, something you believe in? If there is, chase it. Use your toughness, your endurance and that incredibly resilient mind. Use it and change the world.

The calming effect of gently swaying wildflowers brings peace to a busy urban community. We also noticed almost no cherries remaining on our 3 trees which tells me the neighbors are enjoying the free harvest!

We planted wetland plugs in this raingarden last fall, it’s incredible to see all the sweet flag, blue iris and swamp milkw**d emerging from the water. This public garden has been considered a neighborhood eyesore due to drainage issues. We saw a problem and solved it.

No, we didn’t ask 10 different city officials if it was “okay.” We just grabbed the plants and made it happen. When you see a problem in your life or community, remember the power of now. Don’t hesitate, trust your instinct.
