In Dar es Salaam, our CardioStart team is working side by side with the exceptional staff at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI). Together, we’re supporting adult cardiac surgery with a focus on aortic care—sharing skills in the operating room, ICU, and beyond to help strengthen care that lasts long after the mission ends. This is partnership in action: local expertise leading the way, with CardioStart proud to collaborate, learn, and help build a stronger future for cardiac patients in Tanzania. ❤️🇹🇿

Our eighth mission to the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute in Dar es Salaam is underway, October 9–17. CardioStart volunteers are partnering with local medical professionals to strengthen adult cardiac surgery, with a focus on aortic surgery, complex patient care, and hands-on education.

Thank you to our volunteers, Tanzanian colleagues, and supporters for making this work possible. Together, we’re helping build a stronger future for cardiac care. ❤️

September is Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Awareness Month—a time to learn the signs, understand your risk, and encourage loved ones to prioritize heart health❤️

At CardioStart, we want everyone to be heart healthy. That starts with knowing your body and taking an irregular heartbeat seriously.

AFib may feel like a fluttering, racing, or skipping heartbeat. It can also cause shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness—or no noticeable symptoms at all. Left untreated, AFib can increase the risk of stroke and other serious heart complications.

This month, take a moment to check in with your heart:

*Know the signs of an irregular heartbeat

*Speak with a healthcare provider about symptoms or risk factors

*Encourage friends and family to prioritize heart health

*Learn how early detection and treatment can help

If you notice sudden stroke warning signs—face drooping, arm weakness, or speech difficulty—call 911 right away.

Please welcome Veronica, who survived meningococcal septicemia at age 5 and became a bilateral high-leg amputee, also losing her left hand.
Now 25, years of support—including prostheses, motorized wheelchairs, and home accessibility improvements—have helped transform her life. Her story shows what compassion and perseverance can make possible!
