Itâs National Midwifery Week, and thanks to a Creative Loafing article, itâs time to publicly announce that the birth center is closing.
The past ten years defies description.
Midwifery has brought me so much joy. Magical experiences have poured into me, shaping my life in a way that I will forever be grateful for.
So, why is the birth center closing?
Simply, I donât want to own a business anymore that demands so much of my time and energy. Itâs not fair to my family, or me. Itâs also not fair that this profession is so underpaid and marginalized. This career has been a lifestyle that at times, feels unjustly difficult.
Everyone who has worked at the birth center (and in midwifery in general) has committed themselves selflessly to midwifery and the families it serves. I am grateful to all the wonderful people who have come into my life because of the birth center and midwifery.
I want to take a moment to call out the foundational people who helped build the birth center. To my mom and dad, who have blindly cheered me on, and never doubted me when I said I was going to open a birth center. To Harmony, for training me. Carmela for doulaâing me. Haddie and Anna for being students who I equally learned from. Mary Catherine for being my student/birth assistant/partner midwife when we first opened and did âall the thingsâ solo. Megan for covering my maternity leave. Mary Kay for catching Sawyer. Michaela for being a competent relief. Kitty for reliably doing the work. Heather for coming in like a breath of fresh air. Matt for being our prescriber and vascular access specialist. My cousin, Bobby, for being our plumber/contractor extraordinaire. Francisco for always coming in with a crew to do the rehab of the new building. Jocelyn for being our resident lactation specialist. The pediatricians in the community that have supported us by lovingly caring for our babies, especially Dr. Jay, Dr. Kargas and staff, Dr Bhumi and staff, Dr. Hirschfield and Dr Moore and staff. The USF group for being hands down the best place to collaborate and transfer to. Dr. Sites for forging our relationship with north Pinellas hospitals. Jenny for holding space for our patients at EVERA. The chiropractors, doulas and childbirth educators who will continue to support families in our community. Especially, to Laura and Aliaja, who have covered most of the call this past year, which allowed me to sit quietly and decide my future. And finally, to the families that have trusted us with their care.
I learned midwifery in bedrooms, cramped bathrooms, in living rooms and at birth centers. I will continue to use these rare and valuable skills as I pivot into nursing. I cannot thank my community enough for trusting me these past ten years. What a gift. Thank you.
Donât be a stranger.
