One thing I wish more families knew: not all providers go out of their way to become knowledgeable about oral ties. Not even all lactation consultants do.
The reality is that specialized training in oral ties, oral dysfunction, infant feeding, and body tension requires additional education, mentorship, experience, and a significant investment of time and money. We pursue it because families need it.
The majority of families who come to me are not coming because feeding is going beautifully. They come because they're exhausted. Because they're worried. Because they've been told, "Baby is gaining weight, so everything is fine." Or, "They can't have a tongue tie because they can stick their tongue out."
Meanwhile, breastfeeding hurts. Bottles take forever. Baby is gassy, frustrated, leaking milk, clicking, struggling to transfer milk, or parents simply know something isn't right.
Here's what I want you to know:
- A tongue tie evaluation is never just about the tongue.
- A tongue tie release is never my first recommendation.
-Feeding challenges are rarely caused by one thing alone.
We look at the whole baby.
How they move.
How they latch.
How they breathe.
How they feed.
How their body functions.
What happened during birth.
Whether tension, positioning, oral skills, or other factors are contributing.
That's why collaboration matters. That's why I work closely with bodyworkers, pediatric providers, dentists, speech therapists, and other professionals. The best outcomes happen when we look at the entire picture, not just one piece of it.
If feeding isn't going well, I promise to listen. I promise to take your concerns seriously. I promise to look beyond "they're gaining weight" and help you understand what's happening.
I can't promise every answer. I can't promise every outcome.
But I can promise that you will be heard, supported, and never dismissed here.
