If you have PCOS, you are probably on the sugar cycle?
How did you get into this cycle?

If you have PCOS, you are likely insulin resistant (even if you are thin). The cause of PCOS is unknown, but according to research and the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association, PCOS and insulin resistance (IR) are linked.

When you eat a bagel, for example, your body breaks it down into glucose (a simple sugar), and it is absorbed into your blood. That is exactly what is supposed to happen. Here is where IR becomes a problem. Insulin is a hormone that helps that glucose get into cells to make energy. If you do not have enough insulin (or your body can’t use the insulin it has) glucose levels in your blood rise.

When you are insulin resistant, you need very high amounts of insulin to regulate your blood sugar, and your sugar levels are typically high. This puts you at high risk for diabetes.

In addition, insulin is a growth hormone. Excess insulin promotes weight gain, especially around your mid-section. The more weight you gain, the more insulin you produce, and the more weight you gain. It is a vicious cycle.

In women with PCOS, high insulin levels also cause the ovaries to produce excess androgen hormones (like testosterone). The result: more weight gain, excess body hair, acne, and irregular periods.

Are you ready to break that cycle?

I will be doing a series on the 4 types of PCOS. I have several clients that have this and I have been able to help with the hair removal, but I think there are other issues that need to be addressed.
1) Insulin-resistance
2) Inflammatory
3) Pill-induced
4) Hidden causes
Their physician's don't always have the answers and just want to medicate (sometimes this does help, sometimes it's just a band aid)
If you have any questions PM me and I will try and answer them.

Part 4
Assessing Actives:
There are a promising group of actives that can help treat acne, but it's crucial to find the right active ingredient in consideration of acne and skin type. As stated above, providing acneic skin with adequate moisture and hydration is absolutely necessary especially when using certain actives.
1) Benzoyl Peroxide: The most common active ingredient used to treat acne is benzoyl peroxide, and for good reason! it penetrates the pore deeply to oxygenate the pore and clear it of debris. Though effective, take care when choosing the right strength for your clients skin and acne type due to its drying qualities. It is especially important to make sure that acne routines for Fitzpatrick 4+ clients are buttressed by highly moisturizing ingredients when using actives like benzoyl peroxide, as it can cause hyperpigmentation if the skin becomes too dry.

Part 3
MOISTURE IS THE KEY:
Because the most common approach to clearing acne is using dry, harsh products, it is commonly believed that acne needs to be "dried out". In fact, drying the skin out to clear up acne will actively work against efforts toward achieving healthy barrier, with or without acne. A compromised barrier can lead to even more skin issues. With that said, adequate moisturization and hydration is necessary for acneic skin to balance out the use of active ingredients and to allow the skin to repair itself.

Avoid Universal Acne Kits.
Stemming from retention hyperkeratosis are different types of acne that are categorized as inflamed, non- inflamed and combination (the most common)
INFLAMED: appears just how it sounds: red, pus-filled lesions that are often painful.
NON- INFLAMED ACNE is more stubborn that it's counterpart, with a rough, pebble-like appearance that can be difficult to extract.
COMBINATION is simply a mixture of the two types.
To achieve and maintain clear skin, acne type, severity of acne and skin type should determine what product and strength to use. Affecting all skin types, acne cannot be treated by a one-size-fits-all approach. Three-step kits and acne product assortments that are packaged as a universal acne solution often contain scrubs and drying ingredients. Instead of focusing on the unique set of issues any one person may experience, these "universal" acne products are not suitable for all skin and acne types.

What is acne?
1st, let's begin with understanding acne itself. Acne is an inherited disorder of the pore. Acne-prone pores shed five times more dead skin cells than a normal pore, which results in retention hyperkeratosis. Not only do skin cells, or keratinocytes, shed at an accelerated rate, these keratinocytes are also mingling with excess oil that is common within the acne-prone pore. This interaction produces a sticky consistency that is difficult for the skin to shed properly. This abnormal shedding ultimately leads to the formation of the microcomedones under the skin.

Did you know that contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused by things like poor hygiene or greasy food. These elements can certainly exacerbate acne, but are not the root cause.
