THE BLACK BALDIE AND THE 23.3% HETEROSIS LESSON
A Black Baldie is the classic Angus × Hereford cross. The F1 female is the version commonly prized as a replacement. But the famous 23.3% figure was not produced by a Black Baldie-only trial.
The number comes from a long-running crossbreeding project at Nebraska’s Fort Robinson Beef Cattle Research Station, conducted from 1957 through 1976 in cooperation with USDA’s Meat Animal Research Center. The project used Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn cattle across four generations. It was a broader three-breed heterosis project, not a direct test of Black Baldies alone.
University of Tennessee Extension summarizes the result this way: crossbred calves raised by straightbred cows produced an 8.5% advantage in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed. F1 crossbred cows raising crossbred calves added a 14.8% maternal advantage.
When those individual and maternal effects were combined, crossbred cows raising crossbred calves produced 23.3% more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed than straightbred cows raising straightbred calves.
Almost two-thirds of that advantage came from the crossbred cow. At the end of the experiment, when the cows were 12 to 15 years old, 24% of the original crossbred females remained in the herd compared with 11% of the original straightbred females.
That does not guarantee a 23.3% gain in every Black Baldie herd. The exact result came from a three-breed research population under specific conditions. But it illustrates the maternal-heterosis principle that helped build the Black Baldie’s reputation as a commercial cow.
Matt McKinney of Bently Agrowdynamics put the rancher’s view plainly in *Hereford World*: “There’s no better female than the F1 baldie … She will work harder than any other cow.”
