Big changes may be coming soon for Medicare patients who are interested in GLP-1 medications for weight loss.
Joe recently joined the GLP-1 Hub Podcast to help explain the upcoming CMS Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program, which is expected to begin July 1, 2026.
This new program may allow eligible Medicare patients to access certain FDA-approved obesity medications, including medications such as Wegovy, oral Wegovy, Zepbound QuickPen, and Foundayo.
There is still a lot of confusion about how this will work, so the episode walks through some of the biggest questions patients may have, including:
β
Who may qualify
β
Which medications may be included
β
How the prior authorization process may work
β
Why starting weight and BMI history may matter
β
What patients should do if they are denied
β
How to watch out for scams
β
Why nutrition, protein, hydration, and strength training are still so important while using these medications
One important point: coverage may not only depend on your weight or BMI today. For some patients, your starting weight and BMI before medication may also be important, especially if you have already lost weight because the medication is working.
As always, these medications work best when they are part of a comprehensive plan that includes nutrition guidance, physical activity, medical monitoring, and long-term support.
We are also excited to share that Transition Medical Weight Loss expects to begin accepting Medicare insurance in the coming months. More information will be coming soon as we finalize the details.
In the meantime, this podcast episode is a helpful starting point for anyone trying to understand what may be coming with Medicare GLP-1 coverage.
