π WHY INTO THE DARKNESS?
Night running has been part of my trail running experience since I started in late 2001.
In 2003, I ran the Lynchburg Ultra Series and was fortunate enough to run the first Hellgate 100K, which completed what was then known as the Horton Slam.
That experience stuck with me.
I still remember running Hellgate 23 years ago under a full moon. Headlamps were scattered across the mountains, and glow sticks marked the course across the hills and valleys. You could see where you were going long before you ever got there. It was wild.
We thought, Why not give other runners a chance to experience that?
So in 2007, we did.
πββοΈ THE BEGINNING
October 27, 2007 β 50 runners.
Into the Darkness was the first event created by Mountain Ju**ies LLC.
Twenty years later, we're still doing it.
The course and headquarters have changed many times. We've reversed the course, run trails that no longer exist, navigated the infamous Salem Turnpike, moved tons of gravel, finished at the Brugh Tavern, reached 513 finishers in 2012, spent years at Journey End and the Camp Store, and moved to our current headquarters at the old water tower lot in 2025.
But one thing hasn't changed:
There is something special about running trails at night.
Your world gets smaller. Your headlamp becomes your focus. The woods feel different. Sounds carry differently. And every once in a while, you look across the darkness and see another runner's light moving somewhere far away.
That's Into the Darkness. π
20 years. One night. Come experience it.
