About 80% of strokes might be prevented by modifying risk factors. Stroke risk factors can be divided into two categories: modifiable and non-modifiable. Modifiable stroke risk factors, meaning you can change them, include smoking, poor nutrition, and physical inactivity. Non-modifiable risk factors cannot be changed, such as age, gender, and genetic predisposition. The risk for stroke can still vary by person.
