Lone Star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) are now established and expanding throughout New England, driven by warming climates. Known for an aggressive, fast-crawling nature, they are distinct for the white spot on females and for transmitting Alpha-gal syndrome (a red meat allergy). They are common in coastal MA, CT, and RI, with confirmed sightings across all New England states.

When do we see dog ticks? When do we see Blacklegged ticks (aka deer ticks)? These graphs are part of a presentation that Bebop Labs gave at an elementary school.

We see dog ticks mostly April through September. Their peak season is June. Dog ticks are brown and about the size of an apple seed. They don't carry much disease.

We see Blacklegged (deer) ticks all year round. They have two peak seasons: May and October. Blacklegged ticks (deer ticks) are reddish or black and about the size of a poppy seed. We have found that about 40% of blacklegged ticks in NH carry disease.
