Welcome Dr. Trevor Watkins, Class of 2029!

"I was raised in Reno NV, where I discovered the legend of high-desert living. I studied neuroscience and philosophy but ultimately was attracted to the practicality and difficulty of a career in medicine. After a stint in Vermont for medical school I’m ready to return to the sunshine and grand vistas of the mountain west!"

Welcome Dr. Isabel Shimanski, Class of 2029!

"Originally from the mountains of Colorado, I spent my high school years in Washington, DC, and a year in Chicago dancing with the Joffrey Ballet before moving to Salt Lake City for college. Unsure of what I wanted to study, I took an EMT course my first semester and quickly found my path, beginning what has now been a decade of work in EMS. I found my work so engaging that I chose to continue my training and went to paramedic school. After working for many years as a paramedic, I still felt drawn to learn more and expand my scope, and with the support of mentors and loved ones, decided medical school was the right next step. Throughout med school, I have been lucky to continue working as a paramedic, which has helped me stay grounded and connected to the work that inspires me."

Welcome Dr. Robert Morrisset, Class of 2029!

"I grew up in the pacific northwest, including attending college at the University of Washington where I majored in neuroscience and business administration. During my gap years and in between playing in the woods, the water, and the mountains I worked as an ED scribe where I first thought EM could be the place for me. My journey then took me down to the desert in Phoenix for medical school, where I confirmed my love for EM, and a firm distrust of cacti."

Welcome Dr. Hannah Lukes, Class of 2029!

"I grew up in a small ski town in Alaska, where I developed a deep love of playing outside. I knew I wanted to become a physician at an early age after living and working in communities off the road system and witnessing the health care disparities that exist in rural communities. Knowing I wanted to go to med school eventually, I took a few years after college and worked seasonal jobs like commercial salmon fishing, helicopter ski guiding, raft guiding, and scribing in the ED. The intensity and fast pace of these jobs, coupled with my interest in providing care to resource-limited communities, made becoming an EM doc an easy decision."

Welcome Dr. David Monroe, Class of 2029!

"It was a balmy December evening in Southern California when the world and I first met. As the youngest child of three, I rebelled by moving to North Carolina for college. Like a bird in spring, I migrated north to Boston for medical school, during which I also attained a Master of Public Health. The siren call of the sea seduced me; I received a US Navy scholarship for medical school and went on active duty upon graduation. I completed one year of residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Naval Medical Center San Diego before serving as an Undersea Medical Officer for 5 years, where I worked as a primary care physician at the Navy SEAL training school (BUD/S) in San Diego and at a nuclear submarine base in Washington state. Adventures abounded: deep sea diving, diving off a moving submarine, cold weather and mountain medicine training, submarine rescue operations in Norway. After completing my Naval service, I wanted even more adventures, and there was one clear choice: emergency medicine at the University of Utah!"

Welcome Dr. Ty McGrew, Class of 2029!

"I grew up in San Diego, where I fully embraced the beach lifestyle. I grew up surfing and diving, and during my gap year worked as a beach lifeguard for San Diego Lifeguards.
I’m half-Japanese and my favorite way to stay connected to my culture is through food. (Fun fact: I’ve been to Japan over 50 times!)

I was drawn to emergency medicine because it combines caring for patients at their most vulnerable, working in a team, and managing high-acuity situations—while serving patients who might otherwise fall through the cracks."

Welcome Dr. Torey Hill, MD, Class of 2029!

"I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, spending winters skiing in Tahoe and summers at a Type 1 diabetes camp in Kings Canyon. With so much time spent around medicine growing up, I always thought I’d become a doctor, so naturally I decided to try just about everything else first. I worked all over the world as a backpacking guide, in outdoor education, and briefly as a ski lift operator and waitress before finding my way back to healthcare as an EMT. I love the fast pace, teamwork, and patient connection in Emergency Medicine."
