(Tix in Bio)
We’ll invite you to come with a short story from your life, one you could tell in roughly 3-5 minutes. Don’t overthink this; it can be literally anything, big or small, silly or serious – your first love, childbirth, chasing a dream, getting fired, adopting a cat. Just as long as it has some personal meaning to you. (If you feel stumped, you might listen to The Moth to spark some ideas.)
The workshop will play out in three parts:
(Gently) interrogating your story: I’ll teach you how to gently interrogate your story, get to the truest version of it, using principles I learned conducting interviews as a reporter.
Reconstructing your story: We’ll then talk about how to reimagine it, look at the ways the same facts can be used to tell (and live) very different stories. And apply that not just to the story you brought, but some of your deeper stories too.
Telling your story well: Finally, we’ll learn how to tell that story in a compelling way, based on principles I learned as a story coach for The Moth.
We’ll break you into small groups to do this work, inside a cocoon of confidentiality, care and respect. This is where the magic happens; I’ve done this workshop many times, and there is a strange and powerful magic that emerges in these groups, in just a short time. In the sharing of your story and the being witnessed. However, you have no obligation to share in the group; opting out is also a perfect choice.
My hope is that you’ll leave the weekend better able to see your stories. More courageous about questioning them. More able to tell better ones. And no longer captive to stories that don’t serve you. It’ll be fun. It’ll be scary (good-scary). Most of all, it’ll be liberating. I can’t wait to watch you transform.
